Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! We
are so excited to begin this year with your first
grader. Your child is going to have a wonderful
year!
In the following pages you will find important
information about our classroom. We want you
to be aware of the organization of the class,
rules, and expectations. Your support is vital to
our classroom success. Please take a few
moments with your child and read the material
we have provided.
We are looking forward to a very valuable
and successful year. If you have any questions
or concerns, please contact us.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sheri Brizzee and Mrs. Ellen Finer
Absences
If a student is absent from school, he/she will receive an Absent
Folder/bag on their desk upon returning to school. All absent work
should be completed in a timely manner. (Typically 2 days for every
day absent.)
If you are planning a vacation, please let us know in advance. District
policy states the student’s work be given upon return to school. We
will do what we can to accommodate you. However, we only plan our
lessons one week in advance.
Communication
Communication is an essential part to your child’s education. We will be
communicating with you in the following ways:
*Newsletters (twice a month) via email
*Phone calls/Voice Mail
*E-mail
*Notes
In addition, there will be Parent/Teacher conferences during
November and three report cards.
If you have any concerns throughout the year, please contact us. It is
very difficult to reply to phone messages during the school day. E-mail
works best!

Homework
The purpose of homework
We believe homework is an important way to reinforce what has
already been taught in school. Homework teaches students to be
responsible. It incorporates organizational skills and time management
outside of school.
The amount, frequency and types of homework assignments
Each night your child should spend time reading. The District goal for
a first grader is 15 minutes each night (a minimum of 400 minutes per
month). This time also includes when a parent and child read together.
This is their most important “homework”. Every month we will have a
reading incentive program where your child can bring in tickets for
their home reading. Each ticket will count for 20 minutes of reading.
If they are able to bring the assigned number of tickets throughout
the month to reach their 400 minutes, they will be recognized at the
end of the month with a certificate and a prize. More information on
this program will be forthcoming. Home reading will be documented and
incorporated into the report card. Please support and help your child
to reach their reading goal each month. They cannot be successful in
this without you!
Spelling
Spelling homework will be sent home on a weekly basis. On the first
school day of each week, your child will receive a new list of spelling
words that is based on a certain spelling pattern. We practice these
words in class all week in a variety of ways. Spelling homework will be
sent home on Monday and should be completed and returned on
Thursday each week. Please do not do all of your child’s spelling work in
one evening as they require repeated practice for success! Your child
should cut apart the spelling cards and save ALL of them for practice
throughout the year. A small box or Tupperware container is a
convenient place to store them. We continuously review past spelling
words. Your child is then expected to incorporate all these words
correctly in their daily work.
Student’s Daily Folder responsibilities
Every student is responsible for a daily folder. This folder will be
brought home every evening and should be returned to school each
morning. Homework, graded papers, and notes from the office will go
home in this folder. Please empty your child’s folder on a daily basis.
Teacher’s Daily Folder responsibilities
We will be checking your child’s work daily. We will be there to help
your child get organized at the end of the day, and we will do our best
to make sure their homework is in their folder. If this is not
successful, we may need to create a modified plan.
How to help your child with homework
Please make homework an important part of your child’s daily routine. A
daily homework time slot can be very helpful. It is up to your family to
determine the best time of day to do homework. If you take part in
your child’s homework, please do not complete it for him/her. Support
your child’s efforts by helping him/her with their work through praise.
Snacks/Birthdays
We do not have snacks or birthday treats in our classroom. If your
child would like to bring in something for their birthday, please
consider fancy pencils, stickers, erasers, or small toys. There are 22
students in our class this year.
Lunch
Lunch and milk tickets can be purchased in the office or online. Check
our website www.lz95.org for more information. Lunch is 11:00 – 11:45.
This includes time for outside recess. Please be sure your child has a
good breakfast to start the day and is dressed appropriately for the
weather. If you would like to have lunch with your child, you can meet
us by the cafeteria after checking in at the office. (Please bring your
driver’s license with you when you come to school for background
check.)

Throughout the year we will be sending home book orders. If you
