Maccabees is an inspiring tale of a fight for religious and cultural
independence –but is it true? The book was written about sixty years after
the events it describes, in order to heroize the founders of the
Hasmonean dynasty. Archaeological evidence reveals the realities of the
era of the Maccabees and provides a new perspective on their story and
on the writing of history.
