Curriculum Highlights
Language Arts
We will continue our first Book Club Unit (“This is Who I
Am”).“Fire Girl”, a novel by Tony Abbott, represents the
modeled reading component of the Book Club and illustrates
the enquiry question, “How do my choices shape who I am?”
The enquiry question introduced the unit and is carried
through the shared, guided and independent reading materials
as well. The intent is to encourage active thinking about
personal growth. The culminating tasks for the unit include a
writing piece (essay) and a media component (book trailer).
The unit will take approximately 5-6 weeks.

We will conclude the Number Sense and Numeration strand
with a look at Order of Operations, Rate & Ratio and then
move on to the Data Management strand - in which we will
collect and organize primary and secondary data and display
the data using charts and graphs, including frequency tables
and circle graphs. The unit test for Number Sense is tentatively
scheduled for Thurs. Oct. 8th.

Science
Ecosystems and the environment continue to be the focus of
our enquiries in Science as we look at how interactions in
ecosystems support the transfer of energy and the cycling of
matter. We will then move on to study how human actions
impact the environment.
History
Students will investigate the perspectives of various groups in
Canada, on some significant events, developments, and/or
issues related to the shift in power in colonial Canada from
France to Britain.
