Zeus (Jupiter)

• King of the Olympians

• Most powerful

• God of heaven and earth

• Ruler of wealth and delivers justice

• Uses thunderbolts as his weapon

• The eagle is also his symbol

• Youngest son of

Cronos and Rhea

Jupiter is so named because it is so big – it is the “King of

Planets”

Hera (Juno)

• Queen of the Olympians

• Goddess of marriage and childbirth

• Wife/sister of Zeus

• The peacock is her symbol

• Cows and lions are sacred to her

• Jealous

No planet, but there is an asteroid named after her plus a city in Alaska

Poseidon (Neptune)

• God of the sea and earthquakes, and horses

• Trident is weapon

• The dolphin and horse are his symbols too

• Amphitrite is his wife

• Zeus’ brother

Son of Cronos and

Rhea

2 nd most powerful

Neptune is so named because the blue looks like water

Hades (Pluto)

• God of the Underworld and

Wealth (all the treasures in the ground are his)

• Ruler of the dead but he is not Death

• Zeus and Poseidon’s brother

• Son of Cronos and Rhea

• Has a helmet of invisibility

• Coins, Gems and Golden

Chariot with Black Horses symbolize his powers

• Persephone (Spring) is his wife

• NOT EVIL! (but he is relentless)

• 3 rd most powerful

Aphrodite (Venus)

• Goddess of love, beauty and fertility

• Mother of Eros/Cupid

• Wife of

Hephaestus/Vulcan

• Protected sailors

• She could make love occur between the gods

• Symbols are a dove and a rose

• Rose out of the sea on a cushion of foam

Venus is so named because it is a beautiful planet and can be easily seen with just the eye

Athena (Minerva)

• Goddess of wisdom, courage and defensive war

(looked for peaceful ways to settle fights)

• Daughter of Zeus and

Metis (titan)

• Patron goddess of Athens

• Master of arts, crafts, cooking and spinning

• She carries a shield with

Medusa’s head on it; owl and olive tree are her symbols

Minerva was a tiny robot designed by the

Japanese to land on an asteroid, but got lost in space.

Artemis (Diana)

• Apollo’s Twin sister

• Goddess of virgins, the hunt, wild things: protected animals and children

• Deer, and her bow and arrows are her symbols

• Her arrows could sting and cause suffering

• God of War and hatred

• Son of Zeus and Hera, but both hate him

• Cruel, bad-tempered coward who loved violence

• He has three children with Aphrodite

• Symbols include a bloodstained spear, wild boar and vulture

• Son of Zeus and

Semele

• God of wine, parties, drama and happiness

• His symbols were bunches of grapes, ivy, wine chalices

• God of truth, music, poetry, prophesy, the sun, medicine and healing

• He was thoughtful and advised others, and sang better than all the gods

• Son of Zeus and Leto

• Wolves, dolphins, and crows are sacred to him

• Plays the golden lyre

Apollo asteroids are near-earth asteroids

Demeter (Ceres)

• Daughter of Cronos and

Rhea

• Goddess of vegetation, agriculture and fertility

• Had powers of growth and resurrection

• Bundles of wheat, cornucopia and poppies

The asteroid Ceres was the first asteroid ever discovered and is one of the largest

(about the size of Texas). It almost became a designated as a planet

• Daughter of Demeter and

Zeus

• Queen of the Underworld

• Goddess of Springtime

• Kidnapped by Hades

• Wife of Hades

• Must return to the

Underworld for six months of the year

• The pomegranate is her symbol

Hestia (Vesta)

• Zeus’ sister – Oldest of the original gods

• Goddess of the hearth and home

• Gave up her spot on Mt.

Olympus for Dionysus

• Worshipped daily

• Considered a peacemaker

• The fireplace and hearth are her symbols

Hephaestus (Vulcan)

• God of fire and blacksmiths

• Son of Zeus and Hera

• Ugly

• Thrown off Mt. Olympus for interfering with a fight between Hera and Zeus

• Husband to Aphrodite

• Symbols were the anvil

The Hermes Asteroid

• Messenger god and the god of thieves

• Often helped others

• Greek Trickster figure

• Very fast

• Son of Zeus and Maia

• Loves Aphrodite

• Greeks believed he guided souls to

Underworld

• Wore winged headband and winged sandals and carried a staff

Mercury revolves around the sun so fast, it was named for the messenger god. One year is faster than one day on Mercury

Eros (Cupid) not an Olympian

• God of love

• Son of Ares and

Aphrodite

• Often portrayed as a child, but not always

• He has wings

• Uses a bow and arrow – arrows cause one to fall in love
