November 2013
While the secular world moves towards the celebration of
the Christmas season at this time of year, we are reminded
as Catholics of the importance of the feast days of All
Saints Day and All Souls Day celebrated in the Roman
Rite.
All Saints Day, celebrated on November 1, reminds our
community of those men and women who have lived
faithful lives in the Church. This day is a part of the
liturgical calendar of events, and we remember our saints
in our prayers. The historical roots of this celebration have
to do with those martyrs who died in the early Church.
Later, Pope Gregory VII declared this day to be the date
we remember all who lived and died for their faith.
On All Souls Day, November 2, our faith remembers all
who died and we remember those with liturgies,
celebrations or prayers. Both dates remind students of the
depth of our faith and our participation in the Catholic
Church.

~ Conscience
November 11th Remembrance Day
A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture
to influence him/her.
A person of conscience…





.
Chooses to do the ‘right thing’ and
feels good about it
Can see how his/her actions may hurt others
Admits his/her wrong-doing and feels badly
Says ‘sorry’ and tries to make up for mistakes
Keeps promises
On November 11th, Canadians all across the country stop
and remember the men, women and children who were
killed in wars. There are parades and memorial services.
Everybody stands in silence as they remember the more
than 100,000 brave Canadians who were killed. World War
One Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day
of the 11th month. That is why November 11th is called
Remembrance Day. Our school will pay tribute to those
who gave their lives for freedom on Tuesday, November
11th. This special service will be held in the school gym,
commencing at 10:30 a.m., please join us if you can.
These three events help remind us as a Catholic school
system of the importance of celebration of our faith, and
prepare us for the end of the liturgical year and the
celebration of Advent, the beginning of our new liturgical
year.
Book Donations:
We continue to need small books for
students in grades JK to grade 2 to
support their reading skills. If you
have any books at home that you
would like to donate to the school, please let Mrs.
Pileggi our Librarian know. Thanks for your help.
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
St. Mary’s Food Bank on behalf of the St. Vincent de
Paul School Community. The food bank volunteers
were amazed at the amount of food that was donated.
This was an answer to their prayers. Thank you for
your generosity and for thinking of those less fortunate,
all your efforts made a difference in someone’s life.
SABRINA’S LAW-ANAPHYLATICS
SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS
If your child has a severe reaction
to peanuts, peanut by-products,
bee/wasp stings or any other
allergies, as well as Diabetes or the
need for Puffers. Please let the
school know as soon as possible. It
is essential that the information you
provide us is accurate and up-to-date.
In addition, ALL MEDICATION is to be
stored in the office. No medication should be kept
with students or in their bags. We have
procedures in place to safely keep medication, and
to have on hand in case of emergencies.
There are various forms which need to be completed by
you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an
epipen/medication at school. We continue to have students
with severe, life threatening allergies to nuts and peanuts.
Although this may or may not affect your child’s class
directly, we require your continue cooperation in sending
foods to school that are free of peanuts, nuts, or their byproducts. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut
free, but we are attempting to minimize the exposure and
keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.
Lockdown DRILL
In accordance with Ministry regulations, two
lockdown drills will be conducted, one in the fall and
one in the spring. While we hope that a real lockdown
or emergency situation never arises, this practice
helps prepare our students in the event of an
emergency.
Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. Please do not
bring/send your children to school earlier than this
time. Given safety concerns, it is not a good idea to
leave your children outside unattended as student
supervision in the yard begins at 8:45 and not before.
Please make other arrangements for the care of your
children prior to 8:45 a.m.
DRIVEWAY—KISS AND RIDE SAFETY
Many thanks to parents / guardians who
have been using the correct and safe
procedure for dropping their children off
in the morning in our Kiss and Ride program. Our
driveway is made safer when everyone cooperates.
Please ensure you have pulled up to the front of the
drop line to let children in or out of your car. The
driveway gets very congested as 9:00 a.m. approaches,
and many students are arriving after the bell rings.
Please be aware that it is our expectation that children
arrive at school on time and prepared to work.
Halloween Dance Oct. 31
Once again our Catholic School Council sponsored our
Halloween dance, all students had a great time. Many
creative costumes were share. Thank you for helping us
make a safe and friendly day at St. Vincent De Paul with
great choices for costumes.
Thank you to our Catholic School Council and parent
volunteers who helped organize the dance, decorate the gym
and supervise the students.
