In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Virtue of the Month – Conscience …..
During the month of November we will be celebrating
the virtue of conscience. God has given us the ability
to know the right and decent way to act and then to
act that way. We trust that the common Spirit we
share inspires us and guides us to make good
decisions if we allow our conscience to be wellformed.
A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to
influence him/her.
A person of conscience …
 Chooses to do the “right thing” and feels
good about it
 Can see how his/her actions may hurt others
 Admits his/her wrong-doing and feels badly
 Says ‘sorry’ and tries to make up for mistakes
 Keeps promises
School Council Wednesday

Pizza Days will be offered every
Wednesday for students. The
money raised will be going back into the school.
The students will be offered a slice of cheese pizza
and it will cost $1.50 per slice.
The money will be collected every Wednesday

Please bring your own snacks and drinks.
Thanksgiving Food Drive …

allergy. On behalf of these students and their parents
I ask for your co-operation to ensure that peanut and
nut products are NOT sent to the school. We
encourage ALL students NOT TO SHARE FOOD
with any classmates.
Pediculosis …
Student Supervision Times…
We have many parents who drop off lunches for their
children at school. A table has been placed in the
office for lunches. Lunches MUST be labeled with
your child’s name. Classes are NOT to be
interrupted for students to pick up lunches. Please let
your child know in the morning if they should expect
to have a lunch dropped off. Then at lunch time your
child can come down and pick up their lunch.
Although not a communicable disease, pediculosis
(head lice) is a concern to parents and teachers. Each
year it is common for outbreaks of pediculosis to
occur. Unfortunately, in recent years, head lice have
become increasingly common throughout North
America. They are parasites which have been
common among human beings for centuries. They
are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect.
Anyone can be infested with them. If a case of lice is
found at school, we inform all parents by way of a
special letter.
 If cases are found in a classroom, we shall inform
all parents of students in that class. We request
that you also check your own children and, if you
find them to be infested, we would ask you to let
us know so that we may advise you of the proper
treatment for them. This information can also be
obtained from a pharmacist or the regional health
department.
 Even if cases are not reported from the
school, it is a wise precaution to check your
child’s head periodically. Teach them not to
use other people’s combs or hair brushes.
 If your children do become infested by head
lice, we will ask you to keep them out of
school until after they have been treated with
the correct shampoo and their hair is entirely
clear of both lice and nits(eggs).
Health Alert…
Security at St. Mary Catholic School…
Please note that teachers are on supervision duty 15
minutes before the start of the school day. For safety
reasons we ask that you NOT drop your child off at
the school prior to 8:15 a.m. Students are not allowed
in the school prior to 8:15 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m.
unless they are under the direct supervision of a
teacher.
Student absences …
We strongly encourage parents/guardians to
please call the school if your child is going to be
absent or late. You may phone the school at any time
and leave a message. Be sure to state your child’s
name and teacher’s name. The school phone number
is 905-451-1020 and press # 0 for the attendance line.
When students are late they will need to go to the
office for a late slip before entering their classroom.
The Lunch Table…
In each newsletter I bring to your
attention that there are students in
a number of our classes who have
a serious, and in some cases, life
threatening allergy to peanuts, nuts
and peanut and nut by products.
Even the mere exposure to these products may cause
a severe allergic reaction for these children which
could potentially result in death. While these students
may not be in your child’s class, or eat in the area that
your child eats lunch, we are most concerned about
cross contamination which may occur if a child who
eats a peanut product touches a chair, desk, book or
any object that may be touched by a child with this
A reminder that all visitors INCLUDING PARENTS
must come to the office, and sign in every time they
need to come into the building during the day.
Visitors need to sign out when they are finished as
well.
If you are picking up your child at school at a time
other than regular dismissal, we ask that you report to
the office. Arrangements will be made for your child
to be sent to the office. If you intend to send someone
else to pick up your children, please inform the office.
We thank you for your cooperation in supporting a
safe environment at St. Mary Catholic School.
Volunteer Police Checks….
We as a staff greatly appreciate the efforts of our
parent/guardian volunteers. These individuals enable
us to enrich the curriculum for our students. Board
policy requires that all volunteers must produce a
police check to the principal of the school. These
forms are available in the school’s office. We ask that
you complete the form and take it to the local police
station with two pieces of identification (one with a
photo).
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this
process please feel free to contact the school.
Driveway Safety…
The Front Driveway… Your assistance is
required in helping to use the bus loading zone
located closest to our school. Please respect our drivein drop off points. Students and parents are reminded
to follow our already established procedure for
dropping off. Please share the above information
with family members or care givers who may be
picking up or dropping off your child. As a reminder,
we do not have a kiss and ride because we have a
parking lot that children walk through to get into
school. Please remember to PARK your car in the
designated areas. Thank you in ensuring the safety of
your child as well as all students at St. Mary Catholic
School.

ECO School ….
Certification for the 2013-2014 year is coming. Our
school is trying hard to keep our Status by having
many different events throughout the school year.
Our teachers are working hard to teach environmental
lesson. Our students are working hard to reduce
waste by taking home garbage that can be put in the
green bin at home, as well as, recycling. Our
custodians are working hard to recycle and use
environmentally friendly products. This is a
wonderful team effort. We are looking after our world
in the true Catholic Faith.
Upcoming events include:
1) The school has started to distribute
information electronically to reduce paper.
2) Students are asked to bring reusable water
bottles to school to help reduce waste.
3) Every class will be encouraged to make an
environmental poster to mark Earth Day.
4) Other activities will be planned throughout
the school year
Thank you to everyone who has been a great help.
The eco club has been working hard to help out and
the support of everyone involved is appreciated.
Every effort to help the environment is an effort to
love one another more.
