PORTFOLIO PREP: Positive/Negative Still Life
NAME:________________
LESSON FOCUS:
This lesson focuses on creating a still life drawing emphasizing positive and negative
space, line, and pattern.
VOCABULARY:
Balance: A principle of design that refers to the visual equalization of elements in a work
of art. There are three kinds of balance: symmetrical (formal); asymmetrical (informal);
and radial.
Contour drawing: A drawing in which only contour lines are used to represent the
subject matter.
Contour lines: Lines creating boundaries that separate one are from another. Contour
lines define the edges and surface ridges of an object.
Line: A mark made with a pointed, moving tool. Although lines can vary in appearance
(they can have different lengths, widths, textures, directions, and degree of curve), they
are considered one-dimensional and are measured by length.
Negative space: The area around the objects in a painting, sometimes called the
background.
Pattern: A principle of design in which combinations of lines, colors and shapes are used
to show real or imaginary things. Pattern may also be achieved by repeating a shape, line
or color.
Positive space: The objects in a work of art as opposed to the background or space
around the objects.
Still life: A group of inanimate objects arranged to be painted or drawn; also, a painting
or drawing of such an arrangement.
PROCEDURE:






Set up a traditional still life or choose an area in your home to draw. You must
have some empty spaces in and around the objects for this assignment to be
successful.
Do a contour line sketch focusing on the use and balance of the positive and
negative spaces.
Once you have a good idea and strong composition enlarge onto white drawing
paper lightly in pencil.
Using assorted black markers (thick and thin), begin filling in the negative spaces
with a variety of images and patterns.
The “positive” spaces or objects will be left white.
Erase any stray pencil marks.
