Internet Safety and Your Middle School Student

The standard D95 iPad configuration process sets certain restrictions on each student’s iPad to provide a safe and productive learning environment. These restrictions cannot be removed or altered. This document outlines the D95 standard restrictions.

The following apps and functionalities are not enabled on middle school student iPads

 Facetime: a video chatting app.

 iMessage: an instant messaging app.

 Game Center: an app used for tracking high scores of games with other people.

 Shared Photo Streams: a functionality to share mass amounts of photos with other people

 In-App Purchases: a function of some apps to allow the user to purchase add-ons to an app.

 Using Siri (when the device is locked): Precludes access without the password.

Additionally Media Content Filters are set as follows:

 Movies: Movies that are rated PG or lower can be viewed on the videos application.

 TV Shows: TV shows that are rated TV-PG or lower can be viewed on the videos application.

 Books: No explicit sexual content will be viewable in the iBookstore.

 Music: No explicit content will be able to be played back.

 Podcasts: No explicit content play back.

 iTunes U: No explicit content play back.

 Siri: No profanity will be recognized by Siri.

 Apps: Because educational apps that access the Internet are typically rated 17+, the age restrictions for

APPs have not been enabled. School and district policy precludes the downloading of inappropriate content and, while at school, the District Internet filter blocks inappropriate material from within these applications.

While inside the District, students are subject to the District’s Internet filter which blocks Internet access for both minors and adults to certain visual depictions in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

While outside the District, for instance at home or a wi-fi spot, Internet access is typically unfiltered.

Most major Internet Service Providers, like Comcast or AT&T, have parental control information available on their websites which you may want to review.

Regardless of where the Internet is accessed and whether or not the Internet is filtered, students are subject to all provisions of the District’s board policy on Acceptable Use Policy and expected to use the devices in a responsible manner.

District 95 recognizes that new technologies also create new challenges for both teachers and parents. Below is a series of suggestions drawn from a wide variety of professional sources that may aid you, the parent or guardian, in effectively guiding your child’s use of the iPad.

1.

Take extra steps to protect your child. Encourage your child to use and store the iPad in an open area of your home, such as the kitchen or family room, so you can monitor what your child is doing on line. Use the Internet with your child to help develop safe surfing habits. Children often model adult behavior.

Go where your child goes on line. Monitor the places that your child visits. Let your child know that you are there and help teach her/him how to act as she/he works and socializes on line

Understand web site privacy policies. Web sites should spell out your rights to review and delete your child’s information.

4.

Limit the time your student is on the iPad. While the iPad is a very engaging devise, its use should be prioritized for school work. Care and constant monitoring will reduce your child’s exposure to excessive use.

5.

Help your child develop a routine. Many parents have found success by working to create a routine for their child’s computer use. Define a routine as to how the iPad is cared for and when and where its use is appropriate

Take a look at apps and programs. It is to the advantage of the students, parents and school that parents have a working understanding of the apps and student work found on the iPad.

Read and share with your child the Mobile Learning Guidelines for Students and Parents as well as the

Acceptable Use Policy. By reading and discussing the care and use policies, you can create a clear set of expectations and limitations for your child.

We would also like to make you aware of a resource that has been developed to provide your child with an avenue for getting help with his /her new iPad. The iAgents Help Desk is a student run, adult monitored, technical support help desk. Your child may access this resource from the District website from the
