Proceedings of 23rd International Business Research Conference 18 - 20 November, 2013, Marriott Hotel, Melbourne, Australia, ISBN: 978-1-922069-36-8 Integration Processes in the Post-Soviet Arena in the Field of IP Protection: Challenges and Solutions Marina Tsikun In the information age, based on the knowledge economy or intellectual economy, the competitiveness of any single business or a whole country is determined by the advanced technologies (both created or legally acquired). These technologies constitute intellectual property (IP). After having appeared in early 1990-s the CIS countries are actively integrating into world economy, putting efforts to providing their adequate place in the international arena. In the innovation economy the restoration of the lost and the establishing of the new production and cooperation ties inside CIS space as well as with the outside partners is impossible without strengthening of the institute of intellectual property rights (IPRs). In this article two main ways of the formation and development of IPRs in the post-Soviet arena will be examined and analyzed: 1. Each CIS country individually develops national framework of the protection of IP, unilaterally integrates into the international IPRs system and establishes bilateral relations with other CIS countries in the field of IP protection; 2. Establishment of the uniform system of IP protection in the post-Soviet arena, jointly integrated under the international IP protection umbrella. Creation of such national mechanisms of IPRs, that would be concordantly shaped into this integrated system. The main conclusion of the article is that the second way is more suitable and efficient as it leads to the harmonization of IP protection in the post-Soviet arena, and furthers economic cooperation of the CIS countries with more developed world, though this way is less flexible than the first one. The main research methods are analysis and synthesis, empirical analysis, comparison, deduction, induction, conclusion by analysis. st The period of study mainly includes the first decade of the 21 century.
