Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due

GENERAL
34-1 Interface between Computer
Science and Economics & Social
Sciences (ICES) (NSF)
The three divisions of CISE and the SES
division of SBE seek interdisciplinary
research and education projects that
develop new knowledge at the Interface
between Computer Science and Economics & Social Sciences. Projects should
advance knowledge on both sides of the
interface. Projects that use known techniques and results from Computer Science
or Economics & Social Sciences to
advance only one field (either CS or Econ/
SS) are not of interest to the program. NSF

34-5 Living Foundries (DARPA)
DARPA is soliciting innovative research
proposals to develop new tools, technologies and methodologies to transform biology into an engineering practice,
speeding the biological design-build-test
cycle and expanding the complexity of
systems that can be engineered. The goal
is to enable the rapid development of previously unattainable technologies and
products, leveraging biology to solve
challenges associated with production of
new materials, novel capabilities, fuel and
medicines. Ultimately, in turning biology
into an engineering endeavor, Living
Foundries aims to enable on-demand production of new and high-value materials,
devices and capabilities for the Department of Defense. This announcement,
Living Foundries: ATCG, focuses on the
development of the component, advanced
tools and capabilities for rapidly engineering new biological systems. Example
areas of interest include: design and automation tools, modular genetic parts and
devices, standardized test platforms and
chassis, tools for rapid physical construction, editing and manipulation of genetic
designs, and new characterization and
debugging tools for synthetic networks.

34-7 Scholars-in-Residence Program
(Schomburg)
The Schomburg Center residency program assists scholars and professional
whose research on the black experiences
can benefit from extended access to the
Center’s resources. Fellowships funded
by the Center will allow recipients to
spend six months or a year in residence
with access to resources at the Schomburg
Center and other research units of The
New York Public library. The Scholarsin-residence Program is designed to 1)
encourage research and writing on the
history, literature, and cultures of the peo-

HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
34-9 Healthy Habits: Timing for
Developing Sustainable Healthy
Behaviors in Children and Adolescents
(R01) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Institutes
of Health, is to encourage Research
Project Grant (R01) applications that
employ innovative research to identify
mechanisms of influence and/or promote
positive sustainable health behavior(s) in
children and youth (birth to age 18). Positive health behaviors may include: developing healthy sleep patterns, developing
effective self-regulation strategies, adaptive decision-making in risk situations,
practicing proper dental hygiene, eating a
balanced and nutritious diet, engaging in
age-appropriate physical activity and/or
participating in healthy relationships.
Applications to promote positive health
behavior(s) should target social and cultural factors, including, but not limited to:
schools, families, communities, population, food industry, age-appropriate learning tools and games, social media, social
networking, technology and mass media.
Given the many factors involved in developing sustainable health behaviors, applications from multidisciplinary teams are
strongly encouraged. PA-11-327 (NIHG

34-10 mHealth Tools to Promote
Effective Patient-Provider
Communication, Adherence to
Treatment and Self Management of
Chronic Diseases in Underserved
Populations (R01) (NINR)
The purpose of this initiative issued by
the National Institute of Nursing Research
(NINR) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) is to stimulate research utilizing Mobile Health (mHealth) tools
aimed at the improvement of effective
patient–provider communication, adherence to treatment and self-management of
chronic diseases in underserved populations. With the rapid expansion of cellular
networks and substantial advancements in
Smartphone technologies, it is now possible - and affordable - to transmit patient
data digitally from remote areas to specialists in urban areas, receive real-time
feedback, and capture that consultation in
a database. This announcement encourages the development, testing and comparative effective analysis of
interventions utilizing mHealth technologies in underserved populations. PA-11330 (NIHG 9/2/11)

Developmental Perspectives (R01)
(NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued as part of the NIH Basic
Behavioral and Social Sciences Opportunity Network (OppNet), encourages
research grant applications that propose to
increase understanding of the basic cognitive, affective, motivational, and social
processes that underlie decision making
across the lifespan. This includes an
appreciation of the interactions among the
psychological, neurobiological, and
behavioral processes in decision making.
It also includes consideration of the mediating and/or moderating influences of
genetics, physiology, the social environment, and culture. RFA-MH-12-130
