POSITION SUMMARY: (Describe the general nature and the level of work performed by this position.)
The basic function of this position is to provide professional supervision to the SimuLab Minerals Metals
Group Section. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all personnel within the section and
ensuring that the quality policy and objectives of SimuLab are met within the section. Although the incumbent
is expected to have a “hands on” role within the area of responsibility there is the expectation that training of
subordinates is also a key function.
The incumbent is expected to achieve NATA signatory status for the area of expertise, and will therefore
review the quality of analytical results reported to clients.
DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:
DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB AS
ACCURATELY AND COMPLETELY AS POSSIBLE. Indicate the approximate percentage of time devoted to each major task or group

Undertake major, minor and trace metal analysis of customer samples. Bench work may be
directed towards the method development role required to analyse complex samples or “new”
customer samples where a high level of expertise is required. “New” customer samples may
require a component of R&D and this R&D component would require formal documentation.*

Subordinate training in analytical techniques (including AAS, ICP-AES & ICP-MS) and quality control
techniques as detailed in the SimuLab quality system.*

Evaluation of quality control data prior to reporting customer results.*

Ordering of metal section consumables to ensure that goods are received “just in time”. Evaluate
suppliers as detailed in the SimuLab quality system.

Assist management in evaluation of contract proposals.*

Perform other related duties as assigned.

All work is directly supervised by the SimuLab Mineral Laboratory Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: (List the number and titles of personnel directly supervised. Specify the kind and extent of

Has functional supervision of all staff with in the Minerals Metal Section, this includes full and part-time
employees as well as casual and contract personnel.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily.
Educational Requirements (Include certificates, licences and/or registrations required.)

Formal qualification in analytical chemistry, e.g., BSc.
Experience Requirements

At least 10 years professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: (Work environment characteristics described including hazards that may be encountered while
performing the essential functions of the job.)
Exposure to RF power from inductively coupled plasma spectrometers. Exposure to acids including HF and
other corrosive substances.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Physical demands detailed here are representative of those that must be met for an employee to
successfully perform essential functions.)
Employees within this area are expected to lift sample digest racks and change gas cylinders for various
spectrometers. Trolleys are available to assist with cylinder handling.
