Who
Controls
Your Genes,
Cells, and
Tissue?
Timothy Caulfield
Faculty of Law and School of Public Health
University of Alberta
Over the past few decades, billions have been invested
in genetic and stem cell research. Rightly or not, we are
in the midst of a biotechnology revolution. Who controls
and owns genetic material and human tissue? This is one
of the most contested and controversial areas of science
policy. Recent advances, including inexpensive whole
genome sequencing, will likely add further complications.
This talk will review the relevant law and policies and
explore what the empirical evidence tells us about public
perceptions.
Hosted by the SFU Institute for Values in
Policy and Science (ViPS) www.sfu.ca/~vips
