A survey of the nematode-trapping fungi in Oman with emphasis on trapping efficiency.

 Biological control of nematode (parasitic worm that infect different plant parts) by using living microorganism (fungi).

 87 soil samples were collected from different regions in Oman, and analyzed for the presence of nematode- trapping fungi by Stereoscopic microscope.

 Isolation of parasitic nematodes from infected soil by sieving and centrifugation methods.

 Identification of isolated nematode-trapping fungi by using international keys of taxonomy.

 The trapping efficiency and growth rate of the isolated fungi were tested and the results were analyzed by SPSS and Excel.

Note: This was the first record of nematode-trapping fungi in Oman and was published in

Kuwait Journal of Science And Engineering. For more information See attached articles .

Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR): the use of microorganisms to increase production

SCREENING FOR MICROBIAL CONSORTIA AND THEIR METABOLITES FOR

MICROBIAL ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY IN OMANI OIL WELLS

 Atotal of 33 genera and 58 species were identified from Wafra oil wells and Suwihat production water.

 All of the identified microbial genera were first records in Oman and most of them were found to be anaerobic, thermophilic and halophilic, which might be good candidates for

MEOR.

 Microbial consortia in brine samples were identified using a16s rRNA gene sequencer and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis.

Research Assistant

Collaborative Research Project SQU – Petroleum Development Oman

Land Farming in Lekhwair

Project Supervisor:

Dr. Heiko Patzelt, Department of Chemistry.

 Bioremediation: using microorganism (bacteria) to degrade and detoxify harmful compounds such as (chemicals and petroleum wastes) that pollute the environment.

 Collection of soil samples from contaminated and treated oil field, analyze them to determine the concentration of hydrocarbons by (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Soil Test Kit) and compare it with untreated one.

 Isolation of halophilic bacteria from soil samples (oil field) and tests their ability to survive in the presence of crude oil.

 Biotransformation: screen halophilic microorganisms (Bacteria and Archaea) for the ability to degrade different types of hydrocarbons (alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons) under diverse conditions.

 Analyzed the amount of residual hydrocarbons by GC-MS.

 Compile data and assist in routine preliminary analyses, maintain research data in laboratory notebook.

 Operate laboratory and experimental equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, autoclave and analytical balance.

 Follow established procedures to prepare solutions, media and reagent using stoichiometric calculations for measuring, perform library research to find appropriate procedures, as required.

 Test the sensitivity of isolated bacteria against different antibiotics.

 Determine the optimum magnesium and sodium chloride that required by the bacteria by UV spectra (USB-ISS-UV/VIS) and the results were compared by Excel.

 Chemotactic experiments to test the movement of microorganism toward attractant chemicals.

 TLC identification of the lipid composition of isolated microbial strains.
