Sultan Qaboos University annouces its Postgraduate Programs (PhD, Masters, and
Postgraduate Diploma) for Omani and international students, that will start in September 2010.
The University also annouces Postgraduate Scholarships for masters programs (examption
from tuition fees scholarships, teaching scholarships and research scholarships).
General Admission Requirements
2. Applicants for studies conducted in morning sessions should submit release letters from
their employers for the duration of the program. Applicants for studies conducted in
evening sessions should submit a “no objection” certificate from their employers.
3. Tuition fees depend on the specialization taken. Those accepted should submit proof of
a scholarship or financial support.
4. Applicants who satisfy the admission requirements will be invited to assessment
interviews.
5. Ministry of Education staff should contact their ministry for nomination. No application
will be considered without approval of the Ministry.
Doctoral Programs Admission Requirements
1. The applicant should have a Masters or a Medical Doctor degree from a recognised
higher education institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 point
scale or equivalent, or:
2. In the case of an applicant from a system not using a 4-point GPA scale, whose
cumulative GPA is equivalent to less than 3.00 and above 2.75, work experience and
any other academic activity during or beyond the masters degree may be taken into
consideration, subject to the approval of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate
Studies & Research.

Admission Requirements
1. Applicants for programs taught in the Colleges of Science, Agricultural & Marine
Sciences, Commerce & Economics, Engineering, Medicine & Health Sciences and
Education (Curriculum & Method of Teaching English Language) should submit an
English proficiency test result or certificate with a score of at least 550 in TOEFL or
higher (or equivalent in the new versions), or 6.0 in academic IELTS, with a minimum
of 5 in each of its components. Students will not be registered in postgraduate courses
before they attain the required level of English Language.
Admission Requirements
3. The applicant should submit a statement on the objectives and goals for enrolment in
the doctoral program.
4. The applicant should submit three letters of reference, at least two from academics, to
show competence in the discipline of interest and research capability.
Masters Programs Admission Requirements
•
The applicant should have an undergraduate degree from a recognized University or
equivalent institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4-point scale (B average
or Very Good) or equivalent grade. An applicant whose cumulative GPA is between 2.50
and 2.74 on a 4-point scale or equivalent may be considered for Conditional Admission.
In such cases, relevant work experience and any other activities beyond the first degree
may be taken into consideration to assess the applicant’s potential to perform well at a
higher level.
Postgraduate Diploma Programs Admission Requirements
1. The applicant should have an undergraduate degree from a recognized higher education
institution.
2. A cumulative GPA of 2.50 on a 4-point scale or equivalent in the undergraduate degree;
some diploma programs may require a higher cumulative GPA.
3. Any additional conditions specified by the department.
General Requirements for Scholarships for Masters Programs
1. The applicant must fulfill all acceptance conditions required by the postgraduate program
(unconditional acceptance).
2. The applicant for masters scholarships should have a first degree with a CGPA of at
least 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent.
3. All candidates for full teaching and research scholarships must be full time students, and
they must participate in academic work as per the scholarship regulations.

Candidates must have a bachelors degree in a related subject. Candidates with a bachelors
degree in other majors may apply to the program but may be required to take additional
qualifying undergraduate courses to provide them with the necessary background.
Candidates for the following programs must submit a proficiency certificate in English
language:
- History and Library & Information Science (IELTS 4 or equivalent).
- Geography and Mass Communication (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent).
Applicants for the Masters in Translation must have a postgraduate diploma in translation
from SQU with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.
Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation should meet the following
requirements:
- Applicants must submit an English proficiency test result as demonstrated by a
minimum score of band 6.5 in Academic IELTS, with a minimum of 5 in each of the
components, or TOEFL 550 will be required in each part of the test and a score of 4
in the writing component.
- English proficiency certificate must not be older than two years.
- English proficiency certificate must be submitted before 15\4\2010.
- Candidates who fulfill the English language proficiency requirement are required to
take a translation test. The translation test will not be given to candidates who have
not satisfied the English language proficiency requirement.
- The translation test will be given only once. All qualified candidates are required to
take the test on the scheduled date, tentatively during the first week of May 2010.
- Pass the translation test.
- Only those who have the required level of English and have passed the written test
will be interviewed.

Applicants should have a bachelors degree in Education in the specialization applied
for, or a B.A. in any discipline with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Applicants with
Postgraduate Diplomas in school administration or supervision may apply for Masters in the
appropriate specialization.
Applicants from other non-educational disciplines can be considered for the Educational
Psychology program, provided that they may be required to enroll in prerequisite courses
before they are admitted to the MA program.
Applicants for the Curriculum & Method of Teaching Mathematics, Teaching Science,
Educational Psychology and Educational Administration programs should pass the English
test taken in the Language Center at SQU and get level 4. In addition, all applicants must
pass a written exam and interview.
Applicants for the Curriculum & Method of Teaching Arabic Language program, Social
Studies and Islamic Education program must pass the written test and the interview.
A minimum of one year of teaching experience for the Curriculum & Method of Teaching
Science, Teaching Mathematics and Teaching English Language programs.
College of Commerce & Economics
Masters Program taught in English for part-time students

The College offers an Master of Business Administration (MBA) program taught in English
for part-time evening students only, and this will be assessed on a credit system.

Applicants should have a bachelors degree or equivalent from a recognized university.
Candidates with a non-business background are also encouraged to apply. They may,
however, be required to take additional bridging courses to provide them with necessary
background.
Candidates with an undergraduate GPA of 3 or above are currently waived the Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT) requirement.
Candidates with an undergraduate GPA between 2.5 - 2.99 are required to submit a Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 450 or above.
Condidates having the required level of English Language Proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL)
and GMAT score where applicable, will be considered for unconditional acceptance into the
program at the time of interview.

1. Applicants should have a B.Sc or B.Eng in the major applied for. Candidates from other
disciplines in Engineering or Science may be asked to attend additional qualifying courses
before starting the program. Some of the courses may start in the morning.
2. Applicants, as part-time students for Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering must provide
a statement from their employers approving their full time release for at least two days per
week for the duration of the masters program.
3. Applicants, as part-time students for Civil Engineering, Water Resources, Mechanical
Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering programs, must
provide a statement from their employers approving their full-time release for three months
during the second year for the masters thesis.
