Official Constitution of the College of Medicine Graduate Student Society 2013-­‐2014 Constitution I. Name The official name of the Society shall be the "College of Medicine Graduate Student Society”, hereinafter referred to as the CMGSS II. Purpose The aim of the Society is to represent graduate student interests of the College of Medicine and to increase communication between students across the various departments in the College, as well as provide a voice to represent the College at the Graduate Student Association (GSA), and the University of Saskatchewan. The Society will seek to organize presentations, field trips and other events to enhance the graduate experience of the students in the department. III. Membership 1. Members of the Society will consist of all currently enrolled graduate students within the departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and Physiology and Pharmacology. Alumni and Post-­‐Doctoral fellows will be considered invited members if they wish to participate. 2. Members whose conduct is deemed prejudicial to the Society or in violation of University policies shall be liable to suspension or expulsion from the society. A vote for suspension or expulsion will require a two-­‐thirds majority from the Executive Council. 3. All members can attend any Society meetings. 4. No membership fee will be required. IV. Executive Council and duties The Executive Council will consist of the following positions: President, Vice-­‐President, Secretary, Treasurer, Academic Councilor(s) and Alternate Academic Councilor(s). 1. All members of the Executive Council must be voted via a majority vote. Voting will take place during an annual general meeting organized by the outgoing council. 2. The Academic Councilor(s) must attend all GSA council meetings. If a councilor cannot make a meeting the Alternate Academic Councilor(s) must be present in their place. The positions of Academic Councilor and Alternate Academic Councilor may be held in conjunction with other positions on the Executive Council. 3. The constitution may be amended at the Annual General Meeting or in extraordinary cases with two-­‐thirds majority votes from the Executive Council. 4. Responsibilities of the Executive Council Positions: a. President – Organize the meetings, annual meeting and votes. b. Vice-­‐President – Organize the events held by the Society c. Secretary – Take minutes of Society meetings c. Treasurer – Organize the finances of the Society d. Academic Councilor(s) – Attend the GSA Council meetings e. Alternate Academic Councilor(s) – Attend the GSA Council meetings when the main Academic Councilor is unable to attend. V. Society policies 1. Communications of a sensitive nature, e.g. to an authority or administrative level, require an Executive Council meeting for review prior to being sent. 2. All events must be reviewed by the Executive Council and approved by a two-­‐
thirds majority.
