What is the Study?
Frequently Asked Questions
T
When will service begin?
he Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is conducting a Feasibility Study/Alternatives Analysis
for a proposed new branch of service, approximately eleven (11) miles in length. This
study is being done to evaluate the feasibility and
desirability of adding this new branch of service,
as well as to meet the requirements of the Federal
Transit Administration (FTA) for potential project
funding. This new branch may potentially run
from the existing Manassas Station in the City
of Manassas to the Town of Haymarket, located
in Prince William County, Virginia, along Norfolk
Southern’s “B” Line and may potentially include
up to three new stations.
The study is currently focused on the Alternatives
Analysis, which is a requirement of the FTA for
eligibility of federal funding, and includes reviewing potential transportation strategies that
fulfill the Purpose and Need of the project.
Project Schedule
The project is scheduled to run from April 2008 to March 2009. In addition to the technical
studies and reviews, there will be several opportunities for your input.

• Select Locally Preferred Alternatives
VRE is in the early stages of researching the feasibility of adding this new branch of service.
As such, a date for the start of this proposed new service has not yet been determined.
Where will stations/stops be located?
VRE is in the process of conducting a feasibility study/alternatives analysis for adding
this new branch of service. This study involves creating screening criteria for evaluating
potential station/stop sites. The screening criteria are being established, but no sites have
been selected.
Is the project funded for construction?
As part of the feasibility study/alternatives analysis, VRE is exploring a variety of alternatives,
including cost estimates for each of these alternatives. Specific funding sources will be
identified once a preferred alternative is selected.
Will new track line be needed?
There is existing track but there is a possibility that additional track may be needed. This
could be determined at the conclusion of the feasibility study/alternatives analysis.
Will the extension
go to Dulles
International
Airport?
No, an extension
of VRE to Dulles
International Airport
is out of the scope
of the study.
