COD Photography Alums Capture a Piece of
American History through NASA Images
Two College of DuPage alumnae have captured and
documented a piece of American history through their
photographic work with NASA's Space Shuttle program.
When COD Photography Program Manager Frank
Jackowiak built his first darkroom in the sixth grade, he
couldn't have known that his passion for photography
would one day lead to documenting NASA's iconic space
shuttle program. Jackowiak is a veteran of approximately
40 launches and 12 landings, including the final landing
of Atlantis in 2011. Jeffrey Ross said COD’s
Photography program turned his passion into a career.
Ross has captured launches and landings of the Atlantis,
Discover and Endeavor shuttles, as well as documenting
the shuttle program to conclusion. In October 2012, Ross
was on hand to photograph the Endeavor as it made its
final journey through the streets of L.A. to its new home
at the California Science Center. Read More

Weather Hazards and Preparedness Certificate
College of DuPage is offering a new Weather Hazards and
Preparedness certificate program this fall that maximizes
meteorological skills for people who work in public safety,
emergency and risk management, and school/business
administration. Recently approved by the ICCB, the program
will increase knowledge and preparedness for the impact of
weather as it relates to business, emergency management and
response, environment, and other meteorology careers. “When
you look at emergency management, for example, 60 percent of
their responses is addressing severe weather incidents,” said
Meteorology Professor Paul Sirvatka, “Unlike a terrorist
attack or a similar event, bad weather happens all the time, and
people in both the public and private sectors need to be
prepared.” Read More

In Memoriam of former COD Trustee Beverly J. Fawell
the College’s flag is at half-staff to honor the service she provided to
this institution as a Trustee (2001-2007) and the DuPage
community. Please take a moment to read about this remarkable
woman in recent Daily Herald and Suburban Life articles and
on the College’s website.
Even More Kudos to…Eric Hahn, Dan Krakora and Nancy
Carey, who hosted three students from Downers Grove North and
South high schools as part of the Attainable Futures, a youth
program coordinated by the Downers Grove Area Chamber of
Commerce. The students had the opportunity to job shadow the
faculty/staff members as well as speak to them about career
opportunities in their field. Attainable Futures Coordinator Ann
Hattan sent this note to Community Relations Specialist Becky
Gavillet who arranged the visit: “On behalf of the Downers Grove
Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry, I would like to thank you
and COD for your assistance…what a great experience for the
students to see what College of DuPage has to offer. Thanks again
and we look forward to working with you in the future!”

More Kudos to…the
COD Library, which recently
received a $5,000 federal
Library Services Technology Act
grant to purchase cyber security
resources. “This funding allows
the Library to purchase a
number of new materials that
will be accessible to students, community members and
through the state inter-library loan system," said Dan
Blewett, reference librarian. Resources largely will be
academic in nature, but Library officials are seeking input
from COD faculty and community members on what titles
ultimately will be purchased, he said. For more information,
or to provide input on the grant purchase, contact Blewett at
(630) 942-2279, or blewett@cod.edu.
