The Sun-Times Media Group recently highlighted
Autismerica, a social and educational group at COD for
students with autism and their parents. Founded by
counselor Michael Duggan (above) and Veterans Benefits
Coordinator Shelly Mencacci in December 2010, the
group has grown to more than 50 members who attend

‘Tobacco-Free’ Contest
College of DuPage is hosting a
contest to name the “tobaccofree” information campaign.
COD students, faculty and staff
members are eligible to submit
ideas, with the winner taking
home a new Amazon Kindle Fire and a fall premium
parking pass. Submissions will be accepted now through
Friday, March 23, at noon. All entries should be sent to
newsbureau@cod.edu and must contain the contestant's
name, email address and phone number. The contest
winner will be notified by Monday, March 26. The caption
selected for the campaign will be used in advertising,
publicity and informational materials for the College’s
tobacco-free initiative, slated to start this fall. For more

Summer Premium Parking Passes will go on
sale Monday, April 2, at the Cashier’s Office,
BIC 2505. Summer passes are $20 each.

Best in the West
OpenTable.com recently listed Wheat Café as one of the
Diners’ Choice Top 10 Best Lunch Spots in the Chicago
area. Located in the CHC, the student-run Wheat Café is a
60-seat casual dining restaurant staffed by Culinary Arts,
Baking and Pastry Arts, and Hospitality Management
students. Students use fresh regional and seasonal
ingredients in their American cuisine, and menus change
each month. The restaurant added dinner seatings for the
first time this spring. The Diners’ Choice lists are
determined through feedback provided by patrons on
OpenTable.com.
Kudos to…WDCB 90.9fm, which recently received a
$12,387 Public Radio and Television Basic Grant, a
program that is partially supported by a grant from the
Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. WDCB is one of 25
Illinois public radio and television stations to receive this
funding, which will help support operations, programming
and public service initiatives for the station. Read More

Coordinator Sharon Scalise: “The Fashion department would
like to thank everyone for their generosity and support of the
Bridge for Success clothing drive. The response was
tremendous, with more than 500 garments donated, including:
130+ suits, jackets or coats; 300+ shirts or blouses; 115+ skirts
and pants; 62 dresses and sweaters; and BOXES of accessories.”

State University Transfer Day March 15
College of DuPage will host State University Transfer Day from
10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, in the Student
Resource Center second floor walkway. Representatives from all
12 Illinois state universities will speak with students and
community members during this free event. “This is a great
opportunity to learn how your COD associate’s degree can give
you the perfect start toward a bachelor’s degree,” said Jill

Women of Juarez, Mexico March 14
The COD Latin American Studies Committee will host “The
Women of Juarez, Mexico,” on Wednesday, March 14, from 1 to
1:45 p.m. in SSC 3245. Presented by COD Geography Professor
Keith Yearman, this free program will focus on the unsolved
murders and disappearances of thousands of women in Ciudad
Juarez since 1993. Read More

Education/Extended Learning team, whose new
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program was recently
featured on “Addiscene,” a tri-weekly cable news show
Addison Community Television. Click here to watch!
Even More Kudos to…COD Music Professor and
Director of Choral Activities Lee Kesselman, whose recent
work, Kaddish for My Father, was performed with the New
Classic Singers at Christ the King Catholic Church. In
addition, Kesselman’s Ad Amore, which premiered last
spring, will be performed at six different all-state choirs this
year and an ACDA regional convention, and will travel with
Anima – Young Voices of Greater Chicago to Russia and
Latvia later this year. Other premieres this season include
Musica Est Dei by the Wheaton Warrenville South High
School Chamber Singers and an arrangement of Black is the
Color of My True Love’s Hair for the White Plains (New
York) High School Chorus. Finally, the Casper (Wyoming)
Children’s Chorale will premiere Kesselman’s Ani Ehh’yeh for
treble chorus, violin and piano at Carnegie Hall in April. It
will be the fourth work of Kesselman’s which has been sung
at the historic venue.

Online Foundation Scholarship Applications
Applications are now being accepted for fall 2012 Foundation
scholarships through the new online system. Please spread the
word to students. Also, requests for letters of recommendation
will now arrive via email. The emails are generated by students
but sent through an automated system that provides a unique
URL for the letters, which are not accessible to students at any
time. For questions, please contact Brenda Marcy in the Office
of Financial Assistance or Bonnifer Ballard in the Foundation.
WDCB Spring Pledge Drive
COD’s public radio station, 90.9fm WDCB, continues its Spring
Pledge Drive through today, March 9. Thank you to those in our
