Nicole Kramer Brings
Light to Friedrich’s Ataxia
There are many things in Nicole
Kramer’s life that have changed
since being diagnosed with
Friedrich’s Ataxia. The College of
DuPage freshman may be unable
to play volleyball or softball –
sports she once enjoyed – but the
18-year-old Villa Park resident
now kayaks and enjoys cycling on
her new pink recumbent bike.
She’s also participated in
fundraisers for the disease that’s
changed her life. Click here to
view a recent ABC-7 segment
on Kramer. Diagnosed her
freshman year of high school,
only a few of Kramer’s close
friends at Willowbrook High School knew of her condition until she
was highlighted at an assembly. “When I did a presentation at
school no one really knew about the disease,” Kramer said. “I’m not
the kind of person to just walk up to someone and talk about it.”
However, Kramer has overcome her initial shyness to share her
experiences and has become involved with FARA, the Friedrich’s
Ataxia Research Alliance. Read More

community members attended the event, which included a
discussion of recent clinical research on the use of psychedelic
substances as therapeutic adjuncts to psychotherapy for the
treatment of addiction, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and
existential distress at the end of life. Click here for more photos

New Option for Psychiatric Rehab Certificate
COD is offering a Psychiatric Rehabilitation certificate that allows
students to take the bulk of their coursework online. The fourcourse program prepares students to immediately enter the
workforce, qualifying them for entry-level positions within the
mental health care field. “With all the changes in federal
government and statewide statutes, we're seeing a complete hiring
shift in this career,” said instructor Kim Sherman. Sherman and
fellow instructor Bruce Sewick see the shift as a windfall for COD
students. Read More
