The program was designed for nurses who have a foundation in quality nursing practice, independent decision making abilities, advanced psychomotor skills, the ability to interpret advanced monitoring modalities, plus superior collaboration and communications skills. Admission REQUIREMents The MSN: NAP courses and their sequence build upon prior baccalaureate education and professional experiences promoting the development of nurse anesthesia knowledge, concepts, and skills. Emphasis is placed on advanced studies in science, research, and clinical practice to facilitate personal and professional development in an environment that reflects the University’s Franciscan values and encourages lifelong learning. Graduates of the MSN: NAP are prepared to fulfill the requirements to sit for the National Certification Examination, (NCE). In addition, preparation is provided to safely practice as an advanced practice nurse with significant autonomy upon certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Applicants seeking admission to the MSN: NAP program must meet the following minimum requirements: Statement of purpose(max. 500 words) answering the following: Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program or a baccalaureate degree in Nursing or other appropriate major such as a Bachelor of Science in Physics, Chemistry or Biology from a regionally accredited college or university. Recommendations must be from the following individuals: A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher • An anesthesia provider, either a CRNA or anesthesiologist Course content and a grade of 3.0 or better within the last 10 years in: Anatomy & Physiology, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry • An immediate supervisor • A physician the applicant has worked closely with in the critical care area A current, unrestricted license as a registered nurse in any state A minimum shadowing experience of 1-2 days (8-16 hours) with a CRNA or anesthesiologist A minimum of 2 years (within the last five years) as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a critical care area prior to matriculation Current curriculum vitae or resume Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS Current CCRN Completed Graduate School application Successful completion of interview process (interview is by invitation only) It is our expectation that nurses who complete the program will: Accepted candidates must complete a graduate level statistics course prior to matriculation Demonstrate appropriate scientific knowledge and psychomotor ability while providing anesthesia care. Provide individualized anesthesia care to meet the needs of the patient. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrate professionalism and responsibility in the advanced practice role of the nurse anesthetist. Utilize critical thinking and decision making skills to impact patient care. The Nurse Anesthesia Program is 28 months of continuous coursework including didactic and clinical practicum. All students are enrolled full-time and there is no part-time option. Various teaching methods will be utilized throughout the curriculum including distance education via videoconferencing. Clinical practicum will be scheduled to afford the student the maximum opportunity to meet the case requirements mandated by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and will vary from the academic calendar of the University. get started!
