Thanks also to the OCW members who brought holiday treats for the event. An organized event to socialize and network with other women on campus is a valuable resource. Thanks again Kim! OCW member MARY BERLING, fudge fundraising coordinator, and everyone who helped in preparation for the annual OCW Scholarship Fund raiser. With the help of so many campus people purchasing fudge, we are able to continue support of the OCW Scholarship for non-traditional women students. Here’s a peek at OCW members hard at work on fudge preparation day. We had fun and made $666 for the scholarship program. DON‛T LOSE SIGHT OF THESE IMPORTANT WEB SITES: OCW (http://www.uwlax.edu/ocw/index.html) Women's Studies (http://www.uwlax.edu/WomensStudies/) Presenting… Maureen Wilson The second article in our series of talented women working on campus features Maureen Wilson. Maureen currently holds the position of Program Assistant 3 with a working title of Internship Coordinator in the Career Services office, which is housed on the second floor of Wilder Hall. If you have had the chance to work with staff in Career Services you may already know Maureen, but we’d like to take a little time to introduce her to the others who may not have had that opportunity. Since 1998, Maureen has been in her current position as Internship Coordinator. Each semester approximately 180250 students utilize the internship program and she is the person who coordinates all of this to make it run smoothly. Her position requires constant interactions with employers looking for interns and students looking for internships. Her duties consist of advertising Internship Information Sessions to faculty and students, posting internships each semester, sending students' application materials to employers, registering students for internship credit, maintaining student and employer files, and monitoring the internship program on a daily basis. You could say she is the link between the employers and the students to guide them through the whole process. On any given day, you will find Maureen at her desk talking with a student about a possible internship, prerequisite requirements for internship credit, or concerns about internship paperwork. Maureen actually arrived on campus about 16 years ago. In 1985 she graduated from Western Wisconsin Technical College with an Associate's Degree in Legal Secretarial Science and worked for a law firm in town. Even though she was already working, she kept her career options open. Ultimately her desire to work at UW-La Crosse landed her a job in Cowley Hall as a custodian after having worked as a legal secretary for less than a year. It wasn’t the exact position she was looking for, but within 11 months she was hired as a program assistant in the Career Services office and has never left. Her responsibilities in that office have changed through the years but according to Maureen the best part of her current position is the variety of tasks and the opportunity to work with students on a one-on-one basis. Maureen, however, is not the only one in her family with connections to UW-La Crosse. Her husband Bob works in Cartwright Center and her oldest daughter is a recent graduate of UW-L. Their youngest daughter is currently in high school. In her other life away from work, Maureen likes to spend time playing with her dog, walking, reading, gardening and doing counted cross stitch. — Becky Yoshizumi You‛re invited to participate in a Leadership Skills Development Workshop sponsored by...Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL) and the UW System Office for the Status of Women This day-long interactive program will be held on Friday, April 4, 2003 in the University Room of the Pioneer Student Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
