BCPM Calculation Instructions
Which Courses to Include
List all instances of biological science, chemistry, physics and mathematics courses taken, even if they were
repeated, withdrawn from, or if you received a failing grade. Please use a separate sheet for undergraduate,
post-baccalaureate (undergraduate level courses taken after receiving the bachelor’s degree), and graduate
coursework.
If your institution only provides narratives instead of letter grades, there will be no need to list those courses on
this form. For any BCPM courses that were graded pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory, please list those
courses with the grade awarded. There will be no quality points associated with those courses.
Weight
When calculating the GPA, we follow the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) guidelines.
Determine the weight for each grade: A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2points, D=1point, F=0 points. For courses in
which you have received a + or – grade, add .3 for a + and subtract .3 for a – (e.g., A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.)
Credit Hours
List semester credits for each course taken. To convert quarter hours to semester hours, multiply each quarter
hour by 0.67 to get semester hours.
Quality Points
In order to calculate the quality points (QPTS) for each course, multiply the designated AMCAS Weight with
the credit hours (e.g., for a 3-credit course and B+ grade, the AMCAS weight = 3.3 and the credit hours = 3.
The calculation: 3.3 x 3 = 9.9 quality points).
