INTERCULTURAL STUDIES
Catalog Description:
17 - Intercultural Studies
2 units
Exploration of the complexities of intercultural and intracultural relationships in this pluralistic
society. Includes opportunities to share cultural experiences, as well as differences and
commonalities. Explores issues of self-identify, values, cultural differences, and socialization
practices.
2 hours.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should have:
1.
greater understanding and respect for one's own ethnic background and family structure;
2.
greater sensitivity of cultural diversity in relation to values, morality, language, and cultural
traditions;
3.
improved understanding of self-identify and self-esteem;
4.
greater cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity;
5.
increased understanding of racism and prejudice and its impact on society;
6.
strategies for improving campus climate by countering negative stereotypes and social
and ethnic biases;
7.
strategies for positive intergroup relations;
8.
awareness of different ethnic groups.

What is culture?
2.
Assimilation, Acculturation, and Cultural Pluralism in America
3.
What is racism, stereotyping, scapegoating, ethnocentrism?
4.
What are ethnic biases and prejudice?
5.
Minority Identity Development
6.
Strategies for intergroup relations
7.
Self-identity, values, cultural differences, and socialization practices
8.
Exposure to various ethnic groups such as Chicano/Latinos, African Americans, Native
Americans, and Asian Americans
9.
Cross-Cultural research
Methods of Presentation:
Lecture, group discussions, guest speakers, class presentations, group work, and films.
Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Class participation, class exercises and assignments, group project, midterm and final
examination
