INTRODUCTION
Since
January
1990
I
have
been working
with
Dr.
Dwight
Wilhelm, professor of Telecommunications and Fulbright Lecturer,
as a research assistant.
The goal was to translate and transpose
approximately 300 questionnaires given to Colombians during the
summer
of
1988
and
1989,
on
their
attitudes
about
Americans
according to the television and films that they watch;
and to
comprise the data into a master questionnaire to be used by the
professor for further research.

of
accomplishing
this
goal

Wilhelm found it necessary to take on a research assistant who
was famili.ar with the mass media, understood Spanish and who had
a knowledge for the Colombian culture--as well as the idiomatic
expressions used by them.
By fulfilling these requirements,
I
was able to take on the job of translating and interpreting the
questionnaires as accurately possible and formulating the master
questionnaire which would ultimately be used for the formulating
of data by computing services and by Dr. Wilhelm in his research.
In order to understand how the study can be accompl ished
one would have to analyze the procedures involved in forming the
master questionnaire--the foundation for study and this thesis.

ANALYSIS OF THE FORMATION OF THE MASTER QUESTIONNAIRE
When the work of my research began I was given all of the
responded questionnaires.
The first step was to proofread all
300 sheets for any misunderstood words and make the questionnaires
legible
for
translation
and transposition.

understand this process is to see how the questionnaires look in
their raw form.

on to ask for the reasons why the movies were selected and to

The questionnaires finally end with a question that asks for
the
media
that
is
mainly
used
as
a
source
of
news
and
information, and for any remaining comments that the respondent
might have.
The following questionnaires are samples of those used in
the
study
during
Dr.
Wilhelm's
stay
in
Colombia.

questionnaire varies according to the year and the geographic
location that it was given.

PROBLEMS IN THE PROJECT AND SOLUTIONS TO RESOLVE THEM
Initially the job of sifting through the questionnaires and
translating and transposing of them seemed easily attainable for
one who knows the Spanish language fairly well and who is a"pure

However, what appeared to look easy turned out
to be complex.

it means "The Magnificent" and quite possibly misinterpret it as

describe to one another what the show consists of visually and
thematically,

arriving
at
a
more
accurate
conclusion.

problem that I was unable to explain.

In general, I found the majority of the responses to have a
tone of discontent to the way they are viewed by Americans, thus
creating a
negative view towards Americans.
However,
I
could
sense that they were aware of the positive qualities of Americans
as
a
whole,
all
the

recognizing,
quite
blatantly
and
honestly their opinions and observations of the negative sides of
Americans.
I
found that the Colombians felt that American television
programs such as Dynasty, Miami Vice and many others
project an
image of superficiality and violence and ignorance in Americans.

Situation c:omedies were found to make serious problems so easily
solvable, when in actuality they are patronizing to people.
It appears that colombians do not necessarily think that all
Americans live as they see in the media, but that they think that
the rest of the world may think they do.
In many ways I tend to
think the Colombians look at this aspect as an insult and as
arrogance on the American's part.
Nevertheless, the Colombian people recognize what they like
about Americans from what they learn in the media.
They enj oy
the creativity, technical expertise, dedication, humor as well as
so much more.
Colombian people are sincere, yet unabashedly honest.

will admit their concerns while expressing their opinions freely.
The data gathered
from this study proves to demonstrate these
aspects of Colombians and should be quite interesting once the
numbers
are
formulated
to
form
common threads of evidence to
