COURSE DESCRIPTION (as it will appear in the catalog)
The course provides math instruction in interpreting graphs and charts, geometrical concepts, statistical
information and algebraic expressions to meet the skills required for high school graduation.
High school completion credit only. May be repeated as needed.

PREREQUISITES: Students must be enrolled in a Basic Skills class and have taken the CASAS pre-test
TEXTBOOK GUIDELINES: Instructional materials selected in conjunction with Departmental Chair
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to
demonstrate the following:
 Demonstrate mastery of basic geometric, algebraic, and statistical reasoning
 Interpret and work with pictures, numbers, and symbolic information
 Communicate results using a variety of mathematical representations
 Apply knowledge of math concepts and procedures to carry out a task
 Define and select data used in solving mathematical problems
 Determine the degree of precision required by the situation
COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
 Specialized vocabulary for algebra and geometry
 Basic geometric skills and problem solving
 Mathematical formulas for perimeter, area, volume
 Number line, positive and negative numbers
 Solve simple algebra equations
 Graphing coordinates
 Basic data analysis and probability including mean, median and mode
 Graphs, charts, tables and symbolic information
 Multi-step equations and word problems
DEPARTMENTAL GUIDELINES (optional)
This course will satisfy up to two high school credits for HS21. WAC 180-51-061
Independent study may be approved by instructor on a topic related to mathematics.
CASAS post-test will be administered after 46 hours of instruction.
