COURSE DESCRIPTION (as it will appear in the catalog)
This survey course provides a brief overview of world history after 1900 and the relationship to current events.
High School completion credit only.
PREREQUISITES: Students must be enrolled in a Basic Skills class and have taken the CASAS pre-test
TEXTBOOK GUIDELINES: Instructional materials as determined by the Basic Skills Department
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to
demonstrate the following:
 Evaluate the impact of various forms of government on people in the past and present
 Analyze the causes and the consequences of war
 Investigate the economic, political, religious, social, and/or geographic factors that lead nations into war
 Outline events, participants and outcomes of World Wars I and II
 Explain the major impact of the Cold War throughout the world
 Identify environmental issues and their social and economic impact
COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
 Geography: locating major countries using current world maps
 Types of government
 Causes and consequences of war
 World War I and II
 The Great Depression
 Cold War and the Arms Race
 Challenges to democracy and human rights
 Global responsibility for the environment
DEPARTMENTAL GUIDELINES (optional)
This course will satisfy one high school World History credit for HS21. WAC 180-51-061
This course will meet the requirements for High School CWP, Economics, World History or Political Science.
Independent study may be approved by instructor on a topic related to CWP, Economics, World History or
Political Science.
May include: decolonization of Africa, Imperialism, terrorism and trade blocks
CASAS post-test will be used after 46 hours of instruction.
