OBJECTIVE
To learn to recognize minerals and their physical and optical properties through
examination of hand specimens, and learn basics of X-ray diffraction and Raman
spectroscopic methods

Quizzes review material from previous labs (including specified reading), and
specified mineral formulae. Quizzes occur in the initial ~15 minutes of the lab period.
Laboratory reports shall be examined or collected at the beginning of the following
laboratory session. Your worst quiz score grade shall be dropped. Labs are
mandatory and must be made up if missed (no lab grades will be dropped). The lab
midterm will test your ability to recognize minerals, describe mineral specimen
properties, and your knowledge of mineral chemistry. The lab final will cover optical
properties of minerals and will likely be partly cumulative.
ABSENCES / LATE POLICY
Please attend and participate in every lab. There is much material to cover and we
have only a short time. Officially there are no make-ups. If you must miss a
laboratory session, please contact your TA as soon as possible. No late work will be
accepted.
Please bring either your textbook or a recommended mineral field guide to each lab.
