May 2014
Principal’s Message:
Earlier this year, two of
our Grade 8 students
applied for funding
from the Provincial
Government in order
to hold a “Healthy Living Day” here at
Glenbrook School. Our school was
given a $1000 grant in order to facilitate this event.
On Tuesday, May 20th, all students
will participate in a presentation given
by two fitness trainers. This presentation focuses on being active and
eating well. After the presentation, all
students will have the opportunity to
take part in a serious of active games
led by our grade 8 students.
Staffing Change at Glenbrook:
May 1st will be Ms. Nicholls last day with us here at Glenbrook. Ms. Nicholls
has been teaching French to Mr. Grin’s class and provides drama instruction
for Mrs. Eisen’s class. We wish Ms. Nicholls well in her future endeavors.
We are pleased to announce that Ms. Lanktree will be taking over Ms.
Nicholls’ teaching responsibilities for the remainder of the current school
year. Ms. Lanktree will be an excellent addition to the Glenbrook Staff and
has considerable teaching experience.
Glenbrook Book Fair—May 5th to May 8th:
Mrs. Stewart is holding a Book Fair at the school from Monday, May 5th to
Thursday May 8th, in the school library. She has planned a number of special events during the week in order to promote reading at Glenbrook.
On Monday, May 5th, parents and students are invited to come to the school
for breakfast. The Book Fair will open at 7:30 a.m. and will remain open until
3:10 p.m.
We are pleased that our students
have received funding in order to organize this day. This will be
an excellent leadership opportunity for our Grade 8
students.
On Tuesday May 6th, parents and students are invited to come to the school
in your PJs and may shop late. The Book Fair will be open from 8:10 a.m.
until 8:00 p.m.
Dogs At School:
Thursday May 8th will be the last day for the Book Fair. The fair will be open
from 8:10 a.m. to 3:10 p,m.
Parents are reminded that not all students are comfortable with pets. We
would appreciate it if dogs were not
walked to school with students or
walked on school property during
school hours.
Dog owners who choose to exercise
their animals on school property after
school hours are asked to clean up
after these animals when appropriate. We would like to keep our yard
clean and safe for all
students. We appreciate
your cooperation with
this request.
On Wednesday, May 7th, parents and students are invited to come to the
Book Fair dressed as your favourite book character. The best costume in
each division (Primary/Junior/Intermediate) will win a book.
Students who bring a family member (parent(s) /
grandparent(s) etc.) to the book fair will have their
name entered into a draw to win $25 worth of books
for their family and $25 worth of books for their
class. We encourage all Glenbrook families to enter
this draw!
Glenbrook Official Opening Ceremony:
We remind parents that the Glenbrook Official Opening Ceremony takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1st. Parents are

school. Canadian Tire will match all monies collected up
to a total of $300. If you have Canadian Tire money that
you would be willing to donate, please place it in the designated drop-off box in the school office
Parents are reminded that the driveway / Fire Route at the front of the
school must be kept free of cars and
trucks at all times. Parents should
not be stopping / parking their
vehicles in the Fire Route / Bus
Loading zone at any time. Fire Department vehicles and police cars
must be able to move freely through
this area. Your cooperation to keep this
area clear is appreciated.
Appropriate Dress At Glenbrook:
Earth Day Activities:
Canadian Tire Money Collection Box:
We remind parents and students that as the warmer
weather approaches, students will start wearing
“cooler” clothing. Students are to ensure that clothing
selected for school covers all forms of underwear. We
also ask that this spring / summer clothing covers a
student’s mid-drift (stomach). If parents have questions about appropriate clothing, please contact your
child’s teacher or Mr. Thompson in the school office.
Glenbrook students celebrated Earth
Day by cleaning up the school yard
and areas surrounding the school.
We thank Mrs. Kennedy and the
“Green Team” for organizing this
event. The Green Team is helping
Glenbrook students become more
“earth friendly.”

Student Placement Procedures for 2014—2015:
In late May and early June, the staff at Glenbrook Elementary School will hold a number of placement meetings in order
to begin student placement procedures for the 2014—2015 school year. We would like to inform parents about how we
approach this important task.
First—Our school’s staffing committee receives a school organization from the Board’s District Staffing Committee. This
school organization is based on the expected student enrolment and the number of teachers that are allocated to our
school by the Upper Grand District School Board’s Staffing Committee.
Next—Staff collect data on each student which is then used at grade level placement meetings. When considering
placement, we sometimes recommend students be kept together or separated because of the positive or negative influence on each other’s learning. Other issues requiring careful thought include special needs, health concerns, resource
and withdrawal needs and male/female role models (in grades where a choice exists).
We appreciate your trust in our professional judgment in balancing all of the aforementioned considerations when developing classes for next year. If you have questions about this process please contact Mr. Thompson.
E.Q.A.O. Grade 3 & Grade 6 Provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing & Math:
The students at Glenbrook Elementary School have been preparing for the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s
(E.Q.A.O.) Provincial Assessment of Reading Writing and Mathematics throughout the school year.
During the months of May and June, students in Grades 3 and Grade 6 will take part in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (E.Q.A.O.) Provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This assessment has
been scheduled to take place between May 26th and June 6th, 2014.
Students will engage in a 1 hour assessment or two 1 hour assessments each day for a four day period. The assessment is designed to be completed within 6 hours. The Grade 3 students will complete the assessment from May 26th to
May 29th. The Grade 6 students will complete the assessment on May 29th, May 30th, June 2nd and
June 3rd. All assessment materials must be returned to E.Q.A.O. on June 6th, 2014.
We ask that the parents of our Grade 3 & 6 students make every attempt to have their child(ren) at
school on time for each of the assessment days in order to ensure that your child has the opportunity to
complete the assessment. Results of this assessment will be returned to the school in the fall of 2014.
Junior Kindergarten Information Evening:
On Tuesday, June 10th, parents of students who will attend our full day Junior Kindergarten are invited to attend an information night in the library at Glenbrook Elementary School. The parents of students who will be attending Senior Kindergarten and are new to Glenbrook are also invited to attend as well.
School staff will provide parents with information about Glenbrook Elementary School and the Kindergarten program
that Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten students will be engaged in during the 2014—2015 school year. Parents will also have the opportunity to get to know the layout of the school and will visit the Kindergarten classrooms.
Invitations to this meeting will be mailed out to parents within the next two weeks. We encourage all
parents of JK students (and new SK students) to attend this information meeting. We are still accepting registrations for September 2014. Please contact Mrs. Emmons, our Office Coordinator, if
you plan to register your child for Kindergarten for next year.
Confirm Your Voter Registration:
Do you want to vote in the 2014 municipal and school board elections? Are you a new resident or have
