BIOLOGY 1060
MODERN BIOLOGY LABORATORY
SPRING 2014
BIOL 1060 is a 1-credit course for non-majors. It satisfies the LAS laboratory
requirement. Your grade in BIOL 1060 does not affect your BIOL 1000 grade. Every effort
is made to coordinate topics, but sometimes subjects covered in lab will not correspond to
material in the lecture. All Lab sections meet in the Osborne Center, SENG B-314.

Quiz questions are true/false, multiple choice, matching, fill the blank, microscope
observations, drawings, or short answer, to test understanding of major concepts,
instructor’s intro, activities in lab, and highlighted terms in the lab manual. One or two
quizzes will be “take home” (on Blackboard), open book, and will require more writing.
Quizzes are not cumulative. Keep all scantrons for future reference if needed.
There will be six (6) quizzes. ONE QUIZ GRADE WILL BE DROPPED. No Make-ups.
To make up a lab, you may arrange to attend another lab section that same week.
Lab sections are at top of this page. Check with your instructor.
2. Your Responsibilities Fifty (50) Instructor Discretion Points will be given to each
student at the beginning of the semester. Two labs may be missed without loss of
discretion points, but you will not receive credit for the lab. Missing more than two
labs, lack of participation, leaving early, and improper/unsafe dress or behavior in lab
will result in the loss of points at the instructor’s discretion. Attendance will be taken.
You are responsible for any and all material covered whether you are present or not.
You should come to lab having already answered the pre-lab questions. Before you
leave the lab, be sure to turn in your lab Report. These reports will be graded within 23 days and will be your best study preparation for quizzes. You will be expected to do a
few dissections with your group.
You may want to exchange phone number/e-mail address with lab partners.
* If you are pregnant or under a physician's care for any medical problem,
please notify your instructor on the first day of lab.
* Cell phones, IPODS or other electronic devices are NOT to be used in the lab.
* All laboratory students are required to pass the on-line safety quiz by the assigned
deadline or you will not be permitted back into lab. NOTE!! Deadline for Spring 2014 is
11:59 PM on Sunday, February 9!! You will find the quiz at http://bb.uccs.edu
Proper Protective Equipment (PPE), such as lab coat, shoes that cover your feet, is a
requirement in all labs. For the Biology Discussion Topic, you will look up one article
on a biological topic of your choice, library or internet, answer 9 specific questions, and
give a 2-4-minute report to the class. The Blackboard site gives a full explanation of this
assignment. Look at “Biology Topic” from the menu.
3. BLACKBOARD This on-line site will be your source for essential information about
the course, and all announcements. The grade average shown on Blackboard may NOT
be correct. Use it only to check your scores. Check announcements at least weekly.
“Take-home” (online) quizzes will be posted on Blackboard a week before they are due.
* To access Blackboard, go to http://bb.uccs.edu as above for the safety quiz.
* You will use this web site often, so you may want to add it to “favorites”.
* Need help? Email kandrus@uccs.edu or tlc@uccs.edu 255-4108.
Always use your UCCS email address for university business. When emailing your
instructor, include your first and last names and course name. Put something like
"1060 question" in the subject line. Email with unusual subject lines or unidentifiable
addresses will not be opened or read.
The Science Center (SC), CENT 204, phone 255-3689, provides free drop-in tutoring,
computers, Blackboard access, reference books, and academic support to students
taking science courses. slc@uccs.edu This is the best place to go to take the online
safety quiz.
Important Dates You are responsible for following the university’s official policies
regarding deadlines and conditions for adding, dropping, withdrawing, or receiving an
incomplete grade. Consult the current class schedule for specific information. Last day
to drop without the Dean's permission is Friday, April 4, 2014.
Academic Honesty and Student Conduct Students must adhere to the
standards of conduct specified in the UCCS Honor Code. If at any time you experience
a problem with another student or your instructor, please make an appointment to
discuss the issue with your instructor as soon as possible. Meet with your instructor
first before contacting the faculty advisor.
Americans with Disabilities Act If you are requesting accommodation for a
disability, you should contact Disability Services within the first week of classes.
They are located in Main Hall, Room 105, 719-255-3354 or dservice@uccs.edu.
4. Keeping Track of Your Progress Divide the sum of your points by the sum of the
maximum points possible at any time to determine your total percent.
