PUNCTUATION HANDBOOK
Hey: To save paper, we will no longer pass out
“punctuation mark explanation sheets.” You will
now write down the 3 rules in your comp book,
and then transfer them into your Punctuation
Handbook when you are ready to make the page
for that mark.

NOTES: CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS

When you take notes, copy the rule, and come up with an
example of your own. You can use that in your handbook!
Rule #1: Conjunctive adverbs join two
clauses.
 Examples:
 I enjoy classical; however, I prefer jazz.
 I hurt myself dancing; nevertheless, I decided to
go on the hike.

NOTES: CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS

Rule #2: Conjunctive adverbs can be used
within a sentence to provide emphasis.
Examples:
 The new building will, furthermore, provide
storage facilities.
 I was up all night grading papers, and therefore
feel quite tired.

Rule #3: When connecting
two clauses, use a semicolon
before, and a comma after
the conjunctive adverb.
Examples:
Susan is bilingual; consequently,
she has more job opportunities
than others.
Jake won’t see the movie because
he doesn’t like dramas; besides,
he thinks it’s a “chick flick.”
