NCDPI – AIG Instructional Resource: Background Information
Resource Title:
Think-Tac-Toe: Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres
Time Frame: 2 60 minute classes
Subject Area/Grade Level (s): Math/8
Common Core/Essential Standard Addressed:
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. 8.G.9 Know the formulas for the volumes of
cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real world and mathematical problems.
Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
6. Attend to precision.
Additional Standards Addressed: NA
Brief Description of Lesson/Task/Activity: This task would be used within the Geometry unit after the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres is taught.
Type of Differentiation for AIGs (include all that apply):
x Enrichment
Adaptations for AIGs:

Explanation of How Resource is Appropriate for AIGs: This resource contains tasks that allow for higher levels of thinking, are open-ended,
allow for freedom of choice, and include real world applications. These activities would benefit students who have mastered the basics of
volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. These activities allow students to apply their knowledge to real world problems and think creatively.
Needed Resources/Materials
•
Depending on the task selected, a student may need access to the internet.
•
All students will need a copy of the Think-Tac-Toe.

NCDPI AIG Curriculum Resource Outline
STAGE ONE: ENGAGE
Student must have been taught the concepts of cylinders, cones, and spheres. This resource is to be used as an assessment tool for these concepts.
STAGE TWO: ELABORATE
Describe to the students the idea of a Think-Tac-Toe. Students will need to choose one task per row that interests them. The three tasks do not
have to line up like Tic-Tac-Toe. Review each of the choices. Students will need time to complete tasks and be given a deadline.
STAGE THREE: EVALUATE
Teacher can use rubrics and/or checklists to assess each task.
The first row can be evaluated by peers if is effective or not helping them with the formulas or problem solving.
Evaluation Criteria:
 Correct volume formula of a cylinder
 Correct volume formula for a cone
 Correct volume formula for a sphere
The second row can be evaluated using a checklist. Details for the checklist are included in the task itself.
Evaluation criteria for soccer balls:
 Description of each size ball
 Diameter of each ball including units
 Correct circumference for the great circle of each sphere including units
 Correct volume of each sphere including units
Evaluation criteria for soft drinks and nuts:
 3 sketches which include radii and heights
 Correct volume for each including units

The third row can be evaluated using a rubric or checklist. Evaluation criteria for paper cylinders:
 Sketch of each cylinder including dimensions
 Correct volume of each cylinder including units
 Why the cylinders have different volumes
 Change in volume due to using only a half sheet of paper
Evaluation criteria for objects:
 Sketch or picture of a cylinder, cone, and sphere
 Correct volume of each including units
Evaluation criteria for review questions
 3 questions each for volume of a cylinder, volume of a cone, and volume of a sphere (9 total questions)
 Questions vary in difficulty
 Key includes correct solutions for each of the questions
