Our personal definition of ourselves…
 “Who am I?”
 We define ourselves through social
interaction
 Self-concept greatly influences the
communication we have with others


environment (society)
 This perception tends to be distorted


smaller environment.

media has on us.

Individual Selectivity Theory
We have control over the factors that
influence our self-concept.
 We choose people whose voices and
opinions we will value and consider
significant.


