Review of Human Biology curriculum
o Some university courses required regardless of your major
o Some college courses required regardless of your major within college of
natural science
 If you are pre-pharmacy, then you have to take calculus
(otherwise don’t have to)
o Some requirements for human biology major specifically
 Take ANTR 350  is restricted, must email Beth Clark to get in
(email her ahead of time)
 Suggest MMG 301 Microbiology
o Professional schools are looking for well-rounded individuals (take
interesting classes because you will do better in them)
o Can look at transfer.msu.edu to look at transfer credits
 Can take syllabus for class to corresponding MSU department to
get approved for credit

What you need to know/do before enrollment
o DON’T SCHEDULE YOUR COURSES WITHOUT SEEING AN ADVISOR
OR PPA FIRST!!!
o Try to plan out your courses (taking prerequisites into consideration)
before meeting with your advisor
o Meet with your advisor at least once a year, preferably twice
o Thinking about summer courses
 Can take MTH, STT, CEM 141, 142, 161, 162, BS 161, 162, 171,
172, non-science courses through a community college
 Must take CEM 251, 252, 255, PHY 231, 232, 251, 252, biology
courses, anything after 56 credits through a 4 year college
o Think about courses required for specific professional schools you will be
applying to
What you can and can’t take at community colleges (vs 4 year colleges)
Do you know what professional schools are looking for?
o Did you get credit for AP Bio?
 Take honors biology courses or more upper level biology courses
o Competitive?
 GPA, Test score, extra-curriculars, ect.
o Prerequisites?
 Some schools have specific prerequisites, usually listed on
admissions website
o What test will you need to take?
 MCAT, GRE, OCAT, ect.
o Co-curriculars
 DPC (direct patient care) - for pre-PA
 Research
 Won’t make or break your application, but looks good
 You don’t have to like research, but know the
program/school you will be applying to
 Shadowing
 Volunteering
 In and out of a medical setting
 Be consistent (for multiple years if possible)
