Task
You will complete one of the following projects:
Depression Era Journal
Imagine that you were alive during the Great Depression. How would you
and your family have been affected? What hardships would you have
endured? How would you have been helped or hurt by New Deal
Programs? You will create a 10-page Depression Era Journal that
reflects your "life" during the Great Depression. A minimum of 10
descriptive journal entries must be written in first person narrative. This
project will require researching the effects of the Depression on families.
Depression Era Newspaper
You will create a newspaper that reflects the major national and regional
issues faced during the Great Depression of the 1930s. You should
include National News, Local News, Opinion/Editorial, Sports, Business,
Entertainment, Political Cartoons, photos, images, and Ads. A minimum
of 10 well written and period appropriate “articles” including a Headline
news story are required. You will also need to name and date your
publication. This project will require researching the national and
regional news and newspapers of the 1930s.
FSA Photo Journal
You will need to research the Depression Era Photography of Dorothea
Lange and Margaret Bourke-White. Then you will recreate a minimum
of 10 photographs using your friends, family, and neighbors in
appropriate locations in the Red Hook area. Your photographs should
capture the despair, hopelessness, and dignity of the originals and each
photograph should include a descriptive caption that explains the
subject(s). Your photographs should be displayed in a well-organized
professional portfolio.
New Deal Collage/Mobile
In this assignment you will research the New Deal and then create a
picture collage or mobile that represents a minimum of 10 of its
programs. The collage or mobile should include one or more pictures
for each program or agency. You can use the Internet, magazines, and
newspapers, etc., to look for pictures that relate in some way to the
goals and achievements of the ten programs/agencies. Place the
pictures neatly on a poster or hang them as a mobile. Neatly label each
picture, including the name of the agency or program and a short
description of the goal or achievement being symbolized by the picture.
