CONNECTING ACTIVITY (Question, conversation, brainstorming, quick write):
Close your eyes and think of a time when you wanted to try something you saw
someone else doing. Maybe it was at the carnival on a ride you wanted to try. You
may have felt a little scared or maybe excited.
BRIDGING CONVERSATION:
In this story we are going to read about a duck who wants to try something new. He
wants to try and ride a bike. As we are reading the story think about a time when
you wanted to try something new and how it felt.
GENRE SET-UP:
This story is a piece of fiction. When we read fiction books, or stories that are not
true, we want to be on the lookout for the characters in the story, where the story
takes place-the setting and all the different things or events that happen in the story.
STRATEGY FOCUS:
As good readers we make prediction. When we make predictions, we take what is
happening in the story and use it to make a guess about what might happen next.
We can use what we learn about characters and the events in the story to predict
what might happen next.
VOCABULARY SET-UP:
Waste – In this story one of the animals tell another animal that something is a
waste of time. That means that what the other animal is doing is unimportant.
Pedaled – We know that a pedal can be found on a bike it is what you push with
your feet to get the bike moving. Pedaled is the action of you pushing the pedal with
your foot.
ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TITLE AND COVER ILLUSTRATIONS:
Boys and Girls when I read a new story I always like to take time to read the title
and look at the picture. When I do this I try to think of a question I might have for
the author. The title of this story is Duck on a Bike. The author is David Shannon. As
I look at the cover I wonder who taught the duck how to ride a bike? What do you
wonder?

know that a prediction is a guess about what will happen
next. I am going to guess that duck is going to be able to
ride that bike. Let’s keep reading and find out if he does.
At the end of the page.
Wow Duck did it he is riding the bike.
The page with the cat on it.
Oh there is that word waste. The cat is thinking “I

can mean unimportant so I think the cat saying that
riding the bike is unimportant.
The page with the horse – after Duck pedaled a little
faster.
Pedaled that is another word we talked about. I see that
duck has his feet on the pedals of the bike. It looks like
he is pushing on the pedals.
Page with chicken running - before reading
Wow look at the chicken he is running from duck. Hum, I
wonder what the chicken must be thinking. He looks
like he is running and yelling. Turn to a friend and tell
them what you think the chicken is thinking.
Page where the animals are looking at the bike.
Oh my look at those animals looking at the bike. Let’s
make a prediction of what we think the animals are
going to do. Turn to your friend and tell them your
prediction.
