SCULPTURE
A three-dimensional form modeled, carved, or assembled.
SCULPTURE IN THE ROUND
Free-standing sculpture, such as a statue, that you can
view from all sides and that is not attached (except
possibly at the base) to any other surface.
RELIEF
Sculpture in which figures or other images are
attached to a flat background but project out
from it to some degree (bas-relief, haut-relief).
SHAPE
A two-dimensional area that can be Organic or
Geometric
FORM
A three dimensional object that can be
measured by height, width, and depth.
POSITIVE SPACE
The space in an artwork that is occupied by
the object depicted
NEGATIVE SPACE
The space in and around the objects depicted.
PROPORTION
Size relationships between parts of a whole, or
between two or more objects perceived as a
unit.
SCALE
Size in relation to some “normal” or constant
size. Compare with proportion.
BALANCE
Balance is arranging elements so that no one
part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier
than any other part. The three different kinds
of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and
radial.
SYMMETRICAL (BALANCE)
When both sides of an artwork on either side of the horizontal
or vertical axis of the picture plane are exactly (or nearly
exactly) the same.
ASYMMETRICAL (BALANCE)
Unequal distribution of weight or in shape, size, or
arrangement; lacking symmetry.
MOVEMENT
The path the viewer's eye follows throughout
an artwork.
COLOR
Color pertains to the use of hue in artwork and
design. Defined as primary colors (red, yellow,
blue) and secondary colors (green, orange,
violet), various color schemes, etc.
