• Middle class reformers addressed many of the
problems that had contributed to the socialupheavals of the 1890s.
• Journalists & writers exposed the unsafe
conditions often faced by factory workers,
including women & children.
Progressivism
• Many intellectuals began to
question the role of large
corporations in American
society.
• Political reformers struggled
to make government more
responsive to the people.
Together, these formed the
