Plant anatomy

  • Cork (material)
Cork is an impermeable buoyant material, the phellem layer of bark tissue that is harvested for commercial use primarily from Quercus suber (the Cork Oak), which is endemic to southwest Europe and northwest Africa.
  • Bast fibre
Bast fibre (also called phloem fibre or skin fibre) is plant fibre collected from the phloem (the "inner bark", sometimes called "skin") or bast surrounding the stem of certain dicotyledonous plants.
  • Cotyledon
A cotyledon (/kɒtᵻˈliːdən/; "seed leaf" from Latin cotyledon, from Greek: κοτυληδών kotylēdōn, gen.: κοτυληδόνος kotylēdonos, from κοτύλη kotýlē "cup, bowl") is a significant part of the embryo within the seed of a plant, and is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "The primary leaf in the embryo of the higher plants (Phanerogams); the seed-leaf.
  • Phloem
In vascular plants, phloem is the living tissue that carries organic nutrients (known as photosynthate), in particular, sucrose, a sugar, to all parts of the plant where needed.
  • Plant stem
A stem is one of two main structural axes of a vascular plant, the other being the root.
  • Pollen
Pollen is a fine to coarse powdery substance comprising pollen grains which are male microgametophytes of seed plants, which produce male gametes (sperm cells).
  • Stoma
In botany, a stoma (plural "stomata"), also called a stomate (plural "stomates") (from Greek στόμα, "mouth"), is a pore, found in the epidermis of leaves, stems, and other organs, that is used to control gas exchange.
  • Vascular bundle
A vascular bundle is a part of the transport system in vascular plants.
  • Vacuole
A vacuole (/ˈvækjuːoʊl/) is a membrane-bound organelle which is present in all plant and fungal cells and some protist, animal and bacterial cells.
  • Plant anatomy
Plant anatomy or phytotomy is the general term for the study of the internal structure of plants.
  • Epidermis (botany)
The epidermis (from the Greek "επίδερμίδα", meaning "over-skin") is a single layer of cells that covers the leaves, flowers, roots and stems of plants.
  • Phylloclade
Phylloclades and cladodes are flattened, photosynthetic shoots, which are usually considered to be modified branches.
  • Oil body
An oil body is a lipid-containing structure found in plant cells.
