Histology lecture question 7

  • Psoriasis is a skin disease that includes the rapid and excessive growth of keratinocytes. Why is this a problem, and how can symptoms such as redness and scaly skin be explained by the cause?
Protects skin through the process of proteins production; in addition, the top layer of skin made from keratinization is dehydrated, therefore if you had scaly skin and needed to apply a type of moisturizer, it would not penetrate the skin easily due to the building of keratinization.
  • How do you think the transit time of keratinocytes compares to those that do not have psoriasis (slower/faster)?
I believe it would be faster because there is no excess production of keratinization that would cause dry skin.
  • Why does skin have specialized immune cells?
Specialized immune cells are meant to protect the skin against disease and other pathogens.
  • As a person ages, their skin sags and gets wrinkles, and this is caused by the aging of which cells in the dermis?
