Histology lecture question 4

Histology lecture question 4

  • Why do glands have a basement membrane?
The basement membrane provides structural support and protection to the epithelia, as well as the underlying connective tissue.
  • Describe a gland that is mixed, compound, tubuloacinar.
A mixed, compound, tubuloacinar gland would have branched ducts that have both acini and tubules. The meaning of a 'mixed' gland is one in which both mucous and serous are secreted. An example of a gland that is mixed, compound, tubuloacinar would be the salivary gland.
  • Is it possible to have a gland that is tubuloacinar and simple? Why or why not?
No, because more than one duct is required in order for both the acini and the tubules that make up the adenomere to empty the secretions they produce.
