What is an independent and dependent variable?
Independent: characteristic being observed or measured, that is hypothesized to influence/cause an event or outcome (dependent)
Dependent: outcome (disease), it's dependent on the independent to occur.
What does epidemiology measure?
- exposures
- outcomes
- confounders
What is the exposure and outcome?
Exposure: the risk factor or potential cause of a disease or illness, ie. the independent variable.
Outcome: the possible result from the exposure.
What is the confounding variable?
The third variable that affects both the exposure and outcome. A variable that can cause or prevent the outcome of interest. They're adjusted for in statistical analysis. Ex. age, sex, SES.
What are the 2 basic facets of research design?
Manipulation of the study factor - exposure of interest is controlled by the researchers.
Randomization of study subjects - chance determines the likelihood; no control over the subjects which removes bias.
What are the two types of observational studies?
- Descriptive
- Analytic
What do ecologic studies analyze?
The group/the whole population.
What is the difference between an ecologic comparison study and an ecologic trend study?
Trend: examines exposure rates among different groups.
Comparison: examines changes in disease within the same community.
What is the ecologic fallacy?
Observations made at the group level may not be representative at the individual level.
A cross-sectional study is a type of ___ study.
A cross-sectional study is a type of prevalence study.
