Composite materials

  • Aggregate (composite)
Aggregate is the component of a composite material that resists compressive stress and provides bulk to the composite material.
  • Composite material
A composite material (also called a composition material or shortened to composite which is the common name) is a material made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components.
  • Printed circuit board
A printed circuit board (PCB) mechanically supports and electrically connects electronic components using conductive tracks, pads and other features etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate.
  • Radiation-absorbent material
Radiation-absorbent material, usually known as RAM, is a material which has been specially designed and shaped to absorb incident RF radiation (also known as non-ionising radiation), as effectively as possible, from as many incident directions as possible.
  • Glass fiber
Glass fiber (or glass fibre) is a material consisting of numerous extremely fine fibers of glass.
  • Sandwich panel
A sandwich panel is a structure made of three layers: low density core inserted in between two relatively thin skin layers.
  • Sandwich plate system
Sandwich Plate System (SPS) is a structural composite material composed of steel and polyurethane elastomer.
  • Bimetal
Bimetal refers to an object that is composed of two separate metals joined together.
  • Fiber-reinforced concrete
Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) is concrete containing fibrous material which increases its structural integrity.
  • Lamination
Lamination is the technique of manufacturing a material in multiple layers, so that the composite material achieves improved strength, stability, sound insulation, appearance or other properties from the use of differing materials.
  • Cermet
A cermet is a composite material composed of ceramic (cer) and metallic (met) materials.
  • Particle board
Particle board, also known as particleboard and chipboard, is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even sawdust, and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded.
  • Engineered wood
Engineered wood, also called composite wood, man-made wood, or manufactured board, includes a range of derivative wood products which are manufactured by binding or fixing the strands, particles, fibers, or veneers or boards of wood, together with adhesives, or other methods of fixation to form composite materials.
  • Spectra Shield
Spectra Shield is a composite material (specifically, an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber) used in bulletproof vests and vehicle armour.
