What are the two types of diffusion
Simple and facilitated
Protein pump
Use energy from the cell to change shape and pump the molecule. Works in both directions and is faster than diffusion
Active transport process
Molecule/ion combines with carrier protein on outside of membrane. ATP transfers a phosphate group to carrier protein on inside of membrane. Carrier protein changes shape and carries the molecule across the membrane. Molecule is then released. Phosphate is released from carrier protein and recombines with ADP-ATP. Carrier protein then returns to original shape
