The chemical Adenosine Triphosphate
(ATP) is the source of energy for all living things
ATP has three phosphorus groups, linked by
high-energy bonds
When one phosphorus group is removed, energy is
released and transferred to where it’s needed
. ATP now has only 2 phosphorus groups, renamed to Adenosine Diphosphate
(ADP)
. Energy from sunlight (autotrophs) or food (heterotrophs) is used to reattach P back onto ADP, returning it to ATP, a process known as ATP
recycling.
