What is a microscope?
A piece of equipment that allows you to look at objects in detail by magnifying them.
How do you calculate total magnification when looking at a specimen?
Eyepiece lens magnification x objective lens magnification
Why is it important to look at very thin/flat specimen?
So light can pass through it so that you can see it clearly
Why are stains used in microscopy?
So that you can see the details more clearly
What is the lens closest to the specimen called?
The objective lens
What is the name of the lens that you look though?
On the stage
What is a slide?
A piece of clear class to put the specimen on
Name of the thin glass square that is placed on top of the specimen it?
A coverslip.
What does a coverslip do?
Flatten the specimen.
Why can’t you see mitochondria with a light microscope?
They are too small. (1-2µm)
What microscopes give much higher magnifications?
Electron microscopes.
