What is the functional role of each of these modifications?
Microvilli and apical movement
Microvilli – the actin core keeps the microvilli straight for the microvilli to increase absorption within the digestive system or anywhere there are microvilli.
For the apical movement to occur microtubules in the cilia allow it to move back and forth.
Goblet cell (single cell)
As this is an endocrine gland, what predominant structures found in exocrine glands are missing here? What structures are more prominent?
Parenchyma (functional part) and stroma (structure support).
Adipocytes, Blood vessels
Locate serous acini with cell nuclei having basophilic stain. Acini are arranged in small lobules of the gland.
Observe Islets of Langerhans in small clusters lying inside the pancreatic lobule. (lighter colored/pinkish circle of cells within dark purple)
This is opposed to lobar ducts which are usually larger and therefore lined with what?
Simple cuboidal
Examine slide of the colon showing simple tubular straight glands. Note the epithelium and mucous secreting cells
Why does the serous secretion stain while the mucous does not? Which type of stain would show the mucous?
The serous secretion stains and the mucous does not because there is no lipid in the cell.
Hematoxylin and Eosin: stain Cresyl violet color
How can you tell the difference between the endocrine and exocrine components?
Whether it is secrets to blood or not, in this picture, it is an endocrine.
Simple coiled tubular glands are found in sweat gland in slide of the skin. You can see them on the skin slide in the upper left side or in the claw slide.
