Phospholipids
Basis of cell membrane. Barrier, Transport of small non-polar molecules by diffusion
Glycolipids
A carbohydrate chain attached to a lipid. Cell recognition
Cholesterol
The cholesterol content of different membranes varies. Makes membrane more stable and rigid
Intrinsic proteins
Channels and carriers needed for transport. Have hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions
Extrinsic proteins
Charged (link with the heads of the bilayer). Can be receptor sites.
Glycocalyx
Carbohydrate chain
Extrinsic proteins (question)
On either surface of bi-layer, stabilise the membrane by holding the two layers together
Intrinsic proteins (question)
Extend across both layers, allow passive movement of small, water-soluble molecules/ions through protein pores or channels. They can allow active transport of substances across membranes by forming channels
Glycoproteins/glycolipids
Found in the outer layer of the membrane, the carbohydrate layer around the membrane has been glycosylated to form a glycocalyx. Some have roles as hormone receptors or cell-cell recognition
