When I came into class on Monday I came in prepared to talk about project 3 and what the assignment would be about. One my professor explained what we had to do for this paper, in the back of my mind I was trying to figure out what topic am I interested in that would have a lot of research behind it? So I sat for a few minutes and stared brainstorming. I jotted down a few topics that would be “fun” to write about like “animals”, “Halloween”, “Rollercoasters”, and “adrenaline”. One I wrote these ideas down I stared trying to find sub-topics that were associated with the topics I chose. Once I wrote down a few sub-topics, I didn’t feel confident in the topics I chose. As I was sitting there puzzled on what to talk about, one of my classmates asked me what I was going to write about, and I told him wasn’t sure yet; then he asked “why don’t you talk about natural hair?” when he said that I thought it was kind of stupid like what would I say about natural hair? But the more I thought about it I could research a lot about natural hair, so I wrote down on my brainstorming list. As soon as I wrote down the topic I thought of a really good topic that I was highly interested in and that would be really good to research. Although I thought the topic was kind of stupid at first, I thought I could talk about colorism in the African American (black) community. This topic has always caught my attention so I thought it would fit perfect for me and I could include a talk about natural hair inside my research paper. Now that I know what my official topic is I plan to do a lot of research. I think my two main research methods are going to include Google/scholars, and interviews. With Google/scholars I plan to look up “colorism in the black community” and “colorism on social media”. I plan to read different articles and use the information I find to support my argument. In addition I plan to interview people of color and ask their views on “light skinned”, dark skinned”, and “medium skinned” men and women in the black community. With these strategies I hope to find out a lot of information, learn a lot from a personal point of view, and teach my audience something new on a controversial trending topic.
