Ruth Handler (November 4, 1916 – April 27, 2002) was an
American businesswoman, born to Jewish-Polish immigrants
Jacob and Ida Moskowicz, the president of the toy
manufacturer Mattel Inc., and is remembered primarily for
her role in marketing the Barbie doll.
Ruth Handler had noted that her daughter Barbara, who was
becoming a pre-teen, preferred playing with her infant paper
dolls and giving them adult roles. She wanted to produce a
plastic doll with an adult body but her husband and Mr.
Matson thought it wouldn't sell.
But when the Handlers were on a European trip, Ruth
Handler saw the German Bild Lilli doll (which was not meant
for children at all; rather a gag gift for adults) in a Swiss shop
and brought it home.
Once home, she reworked the design of the doll and renamed her Barbie after her daughter. Barbie debuted at the
New York toy fair on March 9, 1959. Barbie became an
instant success, rocketing the Handlers and their toy
company toward fame and fortune.

low-fat vanilla ice cream in the ratio of 2: 4: 1. What mass of each

Ans: banana { 2} , milk { 4} ice-cream {1}

about her?

(B)
How is Barbie different from traditional dolls? Why do you think so?
-Honestly , I think there is a general message or look that most doll
manufacturing companies have in common. I think that “Barbie’s” look is different
physically, but on the other hand I think that her message about being ”beautiful”
& “perfect”.
( C ) Why do you think she is designed as she is?
- I think that her physical features and evident persona would definitely reach out
to a younger demographic . I think they made her the way she is because most
Wealthier families in general seem to be warming up to the idea of moving past a
two kids . A survey from 2002 found that 12 percent of higher-income women
had three or more children recently that fact has stayed steady. The reason I
mention this because another survey said that at least one child is a girl and I
think that that is the Mattel company’s best interest and
they designed Barbie for the girls in the family.
(C)
Why do you think Barbie introduced a
Hispanic doll called Christie?
-I think they did this to reach out to another group of
ethnicities along with introducing a African American
Barbie and a Argentinian Barbie.
(D)
What sort of image does Barbie project?
-I think Barbie promotes a perfect ,flawless, smart persona which…to many is
very un-realistic .
(E)
What does Barbie seem to value most in life?
-well , it seems obvious that LOOKS are everything in Barbie’s world.
(F) Why might Mattel have given her these values?
-it think they gave this image for children to get them to Want to be like that.

From your current studies, describe a habitat of Barbie. Describe this
habitat in a paragraph. How has Barbie adapted to the habitat you have
described:
well , think that in the recent research I have done that Barbie’s habitat is
“the beach” , “chillin” by the pool. The reason for me saying this is
because when you purchase a Barbie doll she is either wearing a
swim-suit or something beach related.
7.
List at least 10 factors that determine what Barbie’s
environment is like
-job -education -people she lives with -hobbies .health relationship(s) –family members - A new change of scenery
8. Mattel has formed a community for Barbie to exist, describe how Barbie
interacts within her community. Think about the different relationships that Mattel
has developed for Barbie:- e.g. Ken, Christie, Stacey. Think about the different
environments that Barbie is exposed to house, ranch etc…
well ,think that the community born for Barbie is that she us almost always with
friends, weather it be the family or ken. The different environments that Barbie’s
exposed to is : house , ranch , mall etc…
9. Decide whether Barbie is a producer, consumer or decomposer.
Justify your answer.
I honestly think she is a decomposer because she has changed the way many
young children perceive beauty.
Describe what you think would happen if:(i)
(iii)
other types of dolls ceased to exist
(ii)
Barbie Dolls increased
The demand for Barbie dolls suddenly decreased
Well if other types of dolls did not exist then that would be a great business
opportunity and would diffeniely get A LOT of Barbie’s sold. If Barbie dolls had
suddenly decreased than that would not be good on the Mattel company & they
would eventually loose the money to create the Barbie dolls
8.
If Barbie was to die out, explain what would have happened. Justify your
response with knowledge gained from your current studies
If Barbie was to die out then that would not only be bad for the manufacturers but
it would be bad for the consumers. Research has shown me that Barbie has’nt
always had the best selling seasons . Barbie has sold more than 2.5 Billion and
is still reaching high numbers.
9. What are the good and bad things about Barbie? Draw a table to summarise
these points.
Good
Barbie provides a source of revenue
Barbie has sold over 2.5 billion dolls

Barbie belongs to a species, that is the Doll species. List some of the common
characteristics that Barbie has?
Some characteristics are:
-smart
successful
flirtatious
humorous etc.
13 Mattel decided in 1959 that sales within the Doll specie was slowing, describe some of
the adaptations that Mattel made to the sub-specie Barbie so that she would be
competitive in the doll market.
Well some strategic moves that Mattel made were to add more accessories’ and sets to the
Barbie “ensombe” . For instance they added the pool set and beach etc.
14 What would happen to the Doll specie if Barbie became the only doll .
Well not only would it not provide a revenue for companies , but it would demolish any
means of money for other people/companies .
1. Barbie was born in 1959 March 9th. Barbie was invented by Ruth
handler who wanted a doll for her daughter that did not rip. Barbie is a
pretty Blonde with short outfits. She has a small waist and long legs. I will
be discussing Facts, interesting things and how I used math to figure out
Barbie.
2. Barbie was named after Ruth Handlers Daughter Barbara. She took
her idea to Mattel Inc. but they could not see it happening. So when Ruth
was in Germany she saw a doll that was exactly what she had pictured.
Though out the years Barbie has had 20 movies and hundreds of dolls +
accessories. The best-selling Barbie doll was “totally hair Barbie” which to
me was Ugly.
3. Barbie, although she looks innocent she has created a whole new
image which has lead to many complaints and law suites . As
controversial as she may be ; she still puts a smile on most kids faces
when they get to play with her.
