June 2014 Precalculus 2014-2015 Summer Assignment for Dr. Drake and Mrs. Jaffer: Emails: william.drake@apsva.us nevin.jaffer@apsva.us Dear Precalculus student, Precalculus is a rigorous mathematics course that builds from prior knowledge. To assure that all students are entering with a basic knowledge of necessary prerequisite Algebra skills, students are to complete the summer assignment problems by the first day of school. Students MUST be prepared to be tested on the material the second full block that the course is in session. The textbook we will be using for the summer assignment is the textbook that will be used for the year long course: Precalculus, 2nd edition ©2010 written by Coburn and published by McGraw-Hill. It is accessible via Blackboard. The summer assignment questions can be found on Blackboard. Specifically the assignment is the Chapter 1 Mixed Review (p. 75, questions #1-20, All) and the Chapter 1 Practice Test (on pp. 75-76, questions #1-25, All ). Just use your username and password to enter Blackboard to find the posted math textbooks. Find the Precalculus textbook and click on the pdf link to the student textbook (not on the picture of the book). Hard copies of the question sets are also available from us (see room numbers below). You may look up all material in the textbook for chapter 1 in the book on Blackboard to help you in reviewing the material. A TI-84 or TI-84 Plus calculator is necessary to complete the summer assignment and will be frequently used in class. You will need to purchase one if you don’t already have one. All your work must be done on a separate sheet. Show ALL your work in an organized manner. Answers only will NOT be accepted. Your work will be graded and will be counted as a quiz grade. If you do not have the packet completed by the first day of school, you may be assigned to a different course. Good luck. Have a brilliant and fun summer! Both of us are looking forward to a productive and instructive year with you, preparing you for the study of Calculus. Dr. Drake (room 3212) and Mrs. Jaffer(room 3220)
